Thank you for all the feedback 🤍 (Part 1)

One of the most common messages I receive from adults is:

“I wish someone had told me this years ago.”

Many adults come to us with symptoms such as:

• A narrow palate
• Crowded teeth
• Mouth breathing
• Snoring
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Poor sleep quality
• Fatigue despite sleeping enough hours
• Teeth grinding
• Jaw tension or TMJ symptoms

These issues rarely happen in isolation.

They are often connected to how the jaws developed, how the tongue functions, and how the airway supports breathing during the day and night.

This is why an airway-focused orthodontist is such an important part of our team.

While myofunctional therapy helps improve tongue posture, nasal breathing, swallowing patterns, and oral muscle function, an airway-focused orthodontist evaluates whether the structure is supporting healthy function.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t just the muscles.

Sometimes there isn’t enough space for the tongue.
Sometimes the palate is too narrow.
Sometimes the airway itself needs to be addressed.

The best outcomes happen when structure and function work together.

That’s why we collaborate closely with airway-focused orthodontists, ENTs, sleep physicians, and other healthcare professionals—to help patients get to the root cause, not just manage symptoms.

✨ Better breathing.
✨ Better sleep.
✨ Better function.

Because it’s never just about the teeth.

How does myofunctional therapy help?

Myofunctional therapy is like physiotherapy for the tongue, lips, and facial muscles.

We don’t simply tell someone to “put their tongue up.”

Instead, we help them develop the ability to do it naturally by:

✔ Improving tongue awareness and control
✔ Increasing tongue strength and mobility
✔ Teaching the correct resting position
✔ Encouraging nasal breathing
✔ Improving lip seal
✔ Retraining swallowing patterns
✔ Eliminating compensations that pull the tongue down

Why is tongue posture so important?

The tongue rests in the mouth for hours every day.

When it rests on the palate, it helps support:

• Healthy jaw development
• A wider palate
• Better airway support
• More stable orthodontic outcomes
• Efficient swallowing and speech

Important to know

If there is an underlying issue such as enlarged tonsils, chronic nasal obstruction, or a tongue-tie, these may need to be addressed first.

👉 You can’t expect the tongue to stay on the palate if the airway is blocked or the tongue cannot move properly.

✨ Myofunctional therapy isn’t about doing exercises forever.

It’s about creating new functional patterns so the tongue naturally rests where it was designed to be.

Because chronic mouth breathing is often a sign that something is affecting how your child breathes, sleeps, and develops.

👄 Mouth breathing can be linked to:
• Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
• Nasal obstruction or allergies
• Low tongue posture
• Narrow palate development
• Sleep-disordered breathing

Over time, this may influence:
• Sleep quality
• Facial growth
• Behaviour and focus
• Speech and oral function

✨ Mouth breathing is not the root problem —
it’s usually a compensation.

The goal is not just to close the mouth,
but to understand why it’s open in the first place.

👅 How myofunctional therapy can help

We focus on improving:
✔ Nasal breathing
✔ Tongue posture
✔ Lip seal
✔ Swallowing patterns
✔ Oral muscle coordination

Often as part of a collaborative approach with ENTs, dentists, orthodontists, and other providers.

👉 Trust your instincts as a parent.
If something feels off, it’s worth exploring further.

Swallowing in children is something most parents never think about…
until problems begin to appear.

But swallowing is not just about moving food from the mouth to the stomach —
it’s a complex muscular pattern that influences how a child breathes, grows, and develops.

👅 What is a healthy swallow?

In a typical swallow:
✔ The tongue rests on the palate
✔ Lips stay relaxed and closed
✔ The facial muscles work in balance

A child swallows thousands of times a day —
which means these muscle patterns constantly shape the face and jaws over time.

⚠️ What happens when swallowing patterns are dysfunctional?

If the tongue pushes forward, rests low, or the lips overwork to swallow,
the body compensates.

Over time, this can contribute to:
• Mouth breathing
• Narrow palate
• Crowded teeth
• Open bite
• Speech difficulties
• Messy eating or chewing issues
• Poor oral muscle coordination

And because swallowing and breathing are closely connected,
sleep and airway function can also be affected.

👅 How myofunctional therapy can help

Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway.

We work on:
✔ Proper tongue posture
✔ Nasal breathing
✔ Lip seal
✔ Functional swallowing patterns
✔ Oral muscle coordination

This helps support:
• Better facial development
• More stable orthodontic outcomes
• Improved chewing and speech
• Better breathing and sleep quality

💡 Why early intervention matters

Children adapt incredibly well —
which is why dysfunctional patterns are often missed.

But untreated swallowing dysfunction can continue influencing growth and function over time.

👉 The earlier we identify these patterns,
the easier it is to support healthy development.

Thank you for this valuable video

One side breathes through the nose.
The other can’t.

This is what can change over time:

• The tongue drops low instead of supporting the palate
• The upper jaw may develop narrower
• The face can grow longer and less supported
• The airway becomes less stable
• Sleep quality can be affected

👉 The body adapts — but these adaptations can impact growth, sleep, and function.

👀 What parents can look for:

• Mouth open at rest
• Lips apart during sleep
• Snoring or noisy breathing
• Frequent congestion or “blocked nose”
• Restless sleep or waking tired

👅 How myofunctional therapy helps:

We don’t just say “close the mouth” —
we address the why behind it.

We work on:
✔ Encouraging nasal breathing (when the airway allows it)
✔ Improving tongue posture (supporting the palate)
✔ Strengthening lip seal
✔ Retraining swallowing and muscle coordination

This supports:
• Better jaw development
• More stable airway
• Improved sleep quality
• Long-term functional balance

✨ It’s not about forcing a change —
it’s about helping the body function the way it was designed to.

Body posture, snoring, weight gain, mouth breathing — how are they connected?

These signs may seem unrelated…
but they often point to the same underlying issue: how the body is breathing and compensating.

🌬️ Mouth breathing

When nasal breathing is limited, the body switches to mouth breathing.

This can lead to:
• Low tongue posture
• Reduced airway support
• Changes in facial growth (in children)

😴 Snoring & poor sleep

Mouth breathing and a less stable airway can contribute to:
• Snoring
• Fragmented sleep
• Reduced oxygen quality during the night

⚖️ Weight gain

Poor sleep can affect hormones that regulate appetite and energy (like leptin and ghrelin),
which may contribute to:
• Increased cravings
• Reduced energy
• Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight

🧍 Body posture

To help keep the airway open, the body may adapt:
• Forward head posture
• Rounded shoulders
• Neck tension

These are often compensations, not the root cause.

👅 Where myofunctional therapy helps

Myofunctional therapy focuses on restoring proper function:
✔ Nasal breathing
✔ Tongue posture (resting on the palate)
✔ Lip seal
✔ Swallowing patterns

This supports a more stable airway and reduces the need for compensation.

✨ It’s not just about one symptom —
it’s about understanding the whole picture.

Lasting progress starts with small, daily habits. Nasal breathing, proper tongue posture, and mindful chewing all play a role in how we sleep, speak, and grow.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy focuses on building these habits step by step, so they become natural over time and support long-term health.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist & Myofunctional Therapist,
I focus on more than just sounds.

I look at how the tongue, lips, and airway function —
because speech, feeding, breathing, and sleep are all connected.

Many challenges we see in children and adults —
unclear speech, feeding difficulties, mouth breathing, snoring, or poor sleep —
are not isolated issues.

They are often linked to how the muscles of the face and mouth are working (or not working) together.

For example:
• A low tongue posture can affect both speech and jaw development
• Mouth breathing can impact sleep quality and behaviour
• Poor muscle coordination can influence feeding and swallowing

👉 Treating the symptom alone is not always enough
—we need to understand the function behind it.

👅 How we can help

Through myofunctional therapy, we work on:
✔ Tongue posture (resting on the palate)
✔ Nasal breathing
✔ Lip seal
✔ Swallowing patterns
✔ Muscle coordination

This supports better speech, better sleep, and better long-term outcomes.

✨ It’s not just about how things look or sound —
it’s about how they function.
