As we celebrate 28 years in business as of May 1st, we find ourselves reflecting on the journey that brought us to Hastings. From the very beginning, our dream was to live in a river town. We were drawn to the charm and sense of community found along the water, so we set out to explore Winona, Red Wing, and Hastings. Not knowing anyone in these towns, we began connecting with local chiropractors, hoping their insights would help us decide where to lay down roots.
Our experiences in Winona and Red Wing were eye-opening. The chiropractors we met there were candid, telling us, “You don’t want to come to this town, there are too many chiropractors, and you won’t like it here.” Their honesty, while appreciated, made it clear that those communities weren’t the right fit for us. Then, we visited Hastings and met Pat and Roger Walker, brothers who ran a thriving chiropractic practice. What started as a casual meeting quickly felt more like an interview, and it was clear that our conversation was meaningful to them as well.
Shortly after, Scott received a message from Pat Walker asking him to call the next day. It turned out that Pat and Roger had been hoping to sell their practice and were waiting for the right people to come along. Although buying a practice wasn’t initially part of our plan, we began considering the possibility.
At this point, Melissa, who had worked as a teller during high school at her local Norwest bank, reached out to see if securing a loan was feasible. The banker she spoke with suggested she contact the president of the bank, who was about to be transferred to Hastings. The Hastings Norwest bank was eager to rebuild its reputation as a community bank and sought to support local businesses. Despite being denied a loan by the Walkers’ bank, the bank president, Marcia Rash, looked over our business plan and decided to give us a chance. Her support was instrumental, and we remain deeply grateful to Marcia for believing in us.
After securing the practice, we began preparing our new office. Here’s where the waiting room chair story comes in: Early on, we’d bought waiting room chairs from a Mayo clinic secondhand store—thinking they’d be needed, and they were affordable. However, when we finalized the purchase with the Walkers, they explained that everything in the clinic was included except the waiting room chairs, which belonged to their parents. It was a small detail, but it reminded us how each step was guided, sometimes in unexpected ways.
As we settled into Hastings, we were fortunate to meet individuals who became pillars in our lives. Elaine and David Baudoin provided us with spiritual guidance and encouragement, helping us navigate both the joys and challenges of building a practice. Marty McNunn, always generous with wisdom and support, was another key figure who helped us grow in faith and as members of the community. Along with Pat and Roger Walker, these friends helped lead us to Christ and supported our journey both professionally and personally.
Looking back, we know that each step was part of a larger plan. We are extremely grateful for the Hastings community, which has embraced us—two outsiders—with kindness and warmth. We have raised our four children here and are proud to call Hastings our home. The friendships, faith, and opportunities we’ve found have shaped our family and our business in ways we never could have imagined. For this, we are forever indebted and sincerely thankful.
