For May's Media of the Month, our staff at Lionheart highly recommend the documentary "A New High," which covers the true story of a group of people early in recovery from Washington State taking a climbing trip to the top of Mount Rainier, along the way discovering the parallels between overcoming adversity on the mountain and accomplishing recovery in their own lives. Their story is inspiring and marked an authenticity in the both the trials and triumphs often inherent to the recovery journey. We hope you enjoy the watch!

Earlier today after our morning treatment group, Lionheart staff members Brooke and Dawson held a game of Bocce for our clients! Even with it being her first time, Brooke and her teammate (not Dawson) blew everyone else out of the water -- it wasn't even close. Life in recovery is fun, and we enjoy living it with our clients.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States. Did you know about half of people with a substance use disorder have co-occurring mental health needs that both impact and are impacted by addiction? In spite of this fact, researchers find less than 10% of adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use needs have access to integrated treatment. Every day, we strive to be part of the solution for our community. We know that comprehensive, integrated care significantly increases the chances of people with mental health needs maintaining long-term recovery. There should be no stigma for needing help -- only compassion, understanding, and adequate resources to help people pursue happy, healthy, and productive lives.

Last Wednesday, Program Outreach Coordinator Dawson Urquidez and Director Tiffany Neuharth had a WONDERFUL tour at the recently opened Capitol Park Mental Health Hospital in Saint Paul! It was incredible to witness firsthand their state-of-the-art resources and discuss how we can be a resource to one another as clients navigate care options. We love our community partners and fellow providers!

Our counselors often begin the day with a check-in for our clients to promote mindfulness and even start conversations that are good for the group to work through together. The thing is, these mindfulness exercises are good for all of us. We put together a small list of some of our counselors' favorite questions they use to check in with clients, so you can check in with yourself! If you feel comfortable, we'd love to see your responses to any or all of these questions too.

Our program outreach coordinator, Dawson, had a wonderful time representing Lionheart at the Dakota County Jail Fair today. Inmates at correctional facilities need resources to plan for life post-release. For many, continuing their recovery journeys and finding affordable, safe, and supportive sober living environments is a priority. We are honored to be a resource to our community, removing barriers for people with the courage to get back on their feet and pursue happy, healthy lives.

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day. We at Lionheart Wellness and Recovery join our community in remembering the lives lost and irreversibly changed by the illicit use of fentanyl. We also celebrate the progress that is being made every day in raising awareness, and through it saving lives. We are a proud carrier of Naloxone -- we are happy to provide it and direct people to quality training for how to use it. Finally, if you or a loved one is affected by unsafe pill or fentanyl use, we are here to help. Reaching out takes bravery, and our compassionate team is here to connect you with the resources you need to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.

Our staff at Lionheart love things that grow. Like seeds planted in good soil, we strive to place our clients in places where they thrive. And, we love to join our clients in appreciating beauty -- not just the beautiful things growing in them, but in the way those things allow them to notice and care more deeply for the beauty in the world around them. Happy Earth Day! Here's to the beauty we all get to see, enjoy, care for, and grow, together.

For April's Media of the Month, we are excited to share a favorite recovery song from Tiffany, our director. Andra Day's Rise Up is a powerful anthem in so many contexts (and it has been used accordingly!). In the context of recovery, its lyrics champion perseverance no matter how many times a person is "broken down and tired", rising back up "a thousand times." Crucial to the song's theming is its emphasis on connection, finding strength in the love of those around us. Where addiction isolates and destroys, recovery connects and heals. This point is so integral that our facility emphasizes group therapy, family programming, and community connection as formats through which our clients can discover and pursue their recovery journey. No one has to endeavor to rise up alone -- we at Lionheart are here to do it with you, whether if be your first or thousandth effort.
