It's birth trauma awareness week.

And I'm going to be very honest, on paper, my crash section by all accounts should have been traumatic. But it wasn't.

Why? Education and support. I knew what was happening. I knew why. And my midwife was in the OR with us.

But that doesn't mean the entire journey was trauma free. Sometimes traumatic birth leads to difficult feeding journeys.

That tiny syringe? That was 36 hours after giving birth. But that bottle of a little over 2 ozs? That's 4 days after.

It is amazing what a bit of time can do.

But the trauma? It sat in the first 3 days wondering if I'd produce enough. Wondering if I'd be able to pump with zero latching for weeks.

What helped? Evidence-based care. Our NICU had begun offering donor milk. I didn't have to stress about producing enough. The stress was still present but not at the same level.

Evidence-based lactation support, vital.

Sometimes trauma is simply going to exist. But we do not need EXTRA trauma. Prenatal education, intrapartum support, postpartum care, lactation support, it all matters. It's all vital.

Of my 7 births, only one left me feeling traumatized and it was completely unmedicated. Why did it feel traumatic? It was extremely precipitous (an hour of active labor and birth), I didn't know what was going on. It was no one's fault, it just wasn't possible to have the support present immediately.

On paper, the one that should have been traumatic wasn't, and the "ideal" was traumatic.

Birth is wild. It is unpredictable. It often goes well and without trauma. But we cannot control some things.

As a doula, I can't promise an easy birth experience, but I can promise you support ๐Ÿ’™

As someone who has had home birth, birth center, unmedicated hospital birth, emergency c-section, and a medicated VBAC, I've learned it's truly possible to have a positive birth in any setting.

NEXT CLASS AUGUST 2nd

What matters most is:

โœจ๏ธDid you have realistic understanding of what you might experience?
โœจ๏ธDid you choose a midwife or OB you truly trust?
โœจ๏ธAre you an active participant in the decision making process?
โœจ๏ธDo you feel safe, loved, and cared for? Is your partner or support person confident in how to help?

This one-day intensive is designed to ensure you feel confident in giving birth unmedicated IF that's what you desire, while also feeling fully equipped to make decisions about any interventions if you need or desire them.

It isn't just about where you birth and who your provider is. Feel prepared, confident, and help ensure your partner is ready to support you.

It's only April and we've already supported:

Home birth
Hospital birth with epidural
Scheduled c-section
Unmedicated VBAC

Why share this? Because everyone deserves support. Doulas aren't exclusive to home birth. They aren't even exclusive to unmedicated birth.

Doulas are for everyone. Every birth can feel more positive with continous support during one of the most intense and vulnerable moments in life.

We have just a handful of birth openings for the remainder of 2026.

Fun fact: Our lovely birth doula is a committed community member who regularly volunteers when she isn't busy with clients, social work, and law school.

She spent Saturday bringing smiles to the faces of dozens of children at a community egg hunt.

Be sure to check out this sweet review from her client. When we say we provide continous labor support, we truly mean continous support ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™
