Hey Mommas! Did we get to meet you at the Molina Healthcare Community Baby Shower? 👋💕

We had such a great time getting to share with you about some of the incredible benefits of breastfeeding, and, just as importantly, some of the very real barriers that can make reaching your feeding goals HARD.

Because knowing that breastfeeding has benefits for baby AND YOU is one thing. Having the support you need to actually make it work for you and baby is another.

And that’s a big part of why MILC League is here. 🫶

We want you to know you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself! And that goes for whether you’re still pregnant and trying to figure out what to expect, you’re in those brand-new newborn days, you’re exclusively pumping, you’ve hit a bump in the road, or you simply need another mom to tell you “Yep, that can be normal” 🤪

🍼✨ BREASTFEEDING: MYTH OR FACT? ✨🍼

❌ MYTH!

Breast milk is incredibly dynamic! 🤯💛

During a feeding, the fat concentration in breast milk generally increases as the breast is drained. That means the milk your baby receives later in a feeding can be higher in fat than the milk available earlier in that same feeding. 🥛✨

But here’s the surprising caveat! 😲 The more frequently you feed your baby, the more fat they may receive overall. Research suggests that feeding more often can be associated with higher milk-fat intake than simply extending the length of each nursing session. In other words, frequency may matter more than keeping baby at the breast for a longer period during each feed. 👀🍼

And here’s another wild fact: breast milk contains special sugars called human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) that babies largely don’t digest themselves! Instead, HMOs help nourish beneficial bacteria in your baby’s gut and can help protect against certain harmful microbes. 🦠🛡️

Basically… breast milk isn’t just food. It’s a constantly changing biological system designed to nourish and support your baby. 🤱💕

Happy Labor Day, Mommas! 🇺🇸🤍

Around here, the word labor has a whole different meaning. 😂

Maybe yours was long, short, induced, spontaneous, medicated, unmedicated, planned, completely NOT according to plan—or maybe your path to motherhood didn’t involve labor at all.

However your motherhood story began, we know the work doesn’t stop there.

Feeding. Pumping. Washing bottles and pump parts. Rocking. Googling. Worrying. Learning. Trying again. And loving these tiny humans through all of it.

So this Labor Day, here’s to the kind of labor that doesn’t always come with a clock-out time. 🫶

When did your milk come in? 🤔🥛

We found an article published TODAY that says milk coming in late may be more common than you think!

Delayed onset of lactation, or milk “coming in” more than 72 hours after birth, was found to affect about 30% of women included in this systematic review and meta-analysis.

Deng et al. found several common factors associated with delayed onset of milk production including it being a mom’s first baby, C-section birth, maternal age over 35, pregnancy-related health conditions such as gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes, and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

On the other hand, more frequent breastfeeding, previous breastfeeding experience, and prenatal breastfeeding education were associated with lower odds of delayed lactation.

So… what does this mean? 🤔

Well, while there are some factors we can’t change, there ARE things we can do to help set mommas up with knowledge, resources, and support. 💪

🤰🏽 Pregnant mommas: You are more than welcome to come join us NOW, while you’re still pregnant! Come learn, ask questions, and build your support system before baby even gets here.

🤱🏻 Mommas with new little ones: Come visit us so you don’t have to figure all of this out alone.

At one of our recent meetings, a momma stopped before sharing something and asked, “Is this a safe place?” 😬

It absolutely warmed our hearts how quickly and unanimously the other mommas gave her a resounding, “YES. Absolutely!” 💓

THAT is what we want MILC League to be.

We want every Pine Belt momma to have the resources, knowledge, tools, and support she needs to work toward her own breastfeeding goals whatever those goals may look like.

📣 HOT TAKE: 1930's natural birth movement was still male centered.

Don't get us wrong, it was absolutely a move in the right direction. And including partners was a good change.

However, birth was always women centered until OB/GYN care became a thing. There was a systematic erasure of midwifery care in the US as well.

And while we love that there was a return to less medical centered birth, it focused on husband coached and doctor preferred interventions such as routine episiotomies.

Doctors were still centered. Hushands became the guide. Women needed to be "taught" how to birth.

In reality, women needed to be taught about the normal physiological process. They needed to be taught to trust their body. To trust the process. And be empowered to make decisions about any interventions they did or did not desire. They needed skilled birth professionals who respected autonomy and knew when intervention was important and life saving vs let's just speed things up with episiotomies, pitocin, etc.

Instead of centering midwifery care again, it was about navigating obstetrical systems.

It was a move in the right direction for mainstream birth, but it wasn't necessarily a true return to 'natural' birth in the way of normal physiological birth.

As a culture, we managed to takeover birth in the hospital system, then rebrand a normal physiological process under several methods.
