Every behavior your child or student does, every single one, is maintained by one of four functions.
Escape. Access. Attention. Automatic.
That's it. Not stubbornness. Not manipulation. Not a bad day. Not a personality flaw. A function.
And the reason most behavioral interventions fail is simple: they treat behavior without identifying the function first. Punishing escape-motivated behavior increases escape attempts. Giving attention to attention-motivated behavior increases the behavior.
Function-based assessment is not optional in ABA. It is the first step.
