Dona Kay Rule- Barrel Racer😍

She put her barrel racing career on hold for thirty years to raise her family and run a business. Then she came back at 61 years old and walked into her very first National Finals Rodeo — and won two rounds.

Born and raised in Minco Oklahoma, Dona Kay Rule grew up with horses and competition woven into everything she did. Her father encouraged her to compete from the time she was young. She ran barrels. She team roped. She calf roped. She was a complete horsewoman in every sense of the word — one of the finest the sport had ever produced. Then life asked her to make choices that most competitive women of her generation quietly made without complaint.

She met her husband John at the National Saddlery shop in Oklahoma City. They bought the business together. They ran it from 1980 to 2008 — building a reputation for craftsmanship so strong the shop made the world champion saddles for the PRCA during the 1988 season. They raised two children. Marshall and Kayla. A family and a business that needed everything she had. She gave it all without hesitation and without regret.

Then the business sold. The children were grown. And something that had been quietly burning for thirty years finally had room to breathe.

She went back to barrel racing full time. Not as a hobby. Not for fun. To compete at the highest level the sport had to offer. Then she found a horse named High Valor — a race-bred gelding she called Valor — and everything changed.

In 2019 at 61 years old Dona Kay Rule qualified for the National Finals Rodeo for the very first time in her career. Then she walked into the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas and won the second go-round. Then won the fifth go-round. Her first NFR. Two round wins. At sixty one years old. The rodeo world stopped and stared at what was happening in the barrel racing alley.

She finished second in the entire world standings in 2020 — just one gold buckle behind the champion — with nearly $100,000 in earnings. She won NFR go-rounds in 2021. Then Valor fell violently at the back of the third barrel at Calgary in 2023 and his injuries were serious enough that he spent six weeks living with a veterinarian in Colorado before coming home to Minco for five months of hand walking and daily care. She walked him two miles every single day. She said simply — this horse does not owe me anything. I owe him everything.

Then her hip gave out. She had hip replacement surgery in 2022. Then she climbed back on Valor as soon as the doctors let her and went right back to competing because Dona Kay Rule does not stop. She received the WPRA Pioneer Award — one of the highest honors the organization gives. Over $870,000 in career earnings across a professional barrel racing career that most cowgirls start in their twenties and she started at sixty one.

She said it herself with the quiet certainty of a woman who understands exactly what she sacrificed and exactly what she got in return — "I'm a mother and a grandmother and my husband and I had a business for thirty years. I just couldn't leave them behind to do it."

She didn't leave them behind. She brought them along for everything that came after.
