October 18–24 is Invisible Disabilities Week.

Not every disability is visible. Some people live with chronic illness, chronic pain, fatigue, neurological conditions, and other disabilities that may not be obvious to the people around them.

Invisible Disabilities Week is an opportunity to raise awareness, challenge assumptions, and help people understand that you cannot determine someone’s health, abilities, or struggles by looking at them.

Someone may look fine and still be managing pain, brain fog, exhaustion, or symptoms that affect every part of their day. They may be working hard to do things that others take for granted, or using every bit of energy they have just to get through the day.

And because their disability isn’t always visible, they may also have to explain themselves, justify their limitations, or deal with the assumption that they’re doing better than they really are.

This week is about making space for those experiences. It’s about listening without judgment, believing people when they tell you what they’re going through, and remembering that looking healthy isn’t the same as being healthy.

You don’t have to see someone’s disability to respect its impact.

If you’ve ever been told you look fine… you belong here. 🤍

Accessibility isn’t one-size-fits-all. ♿

A ramp may solve one person’s barrier. A grab bar, different door hardware, better lighting, a shower modification, or a mobility aid may be the solution for someone else.

That’s why accessibility should start with the person, not a checklist.

Occupational therapy looks at:
• What you want and need to do
• Where barriers are occurring
• How you’re currently completing the task
• What your environment looks like
• What adaptations could make participation safer and easier

Sometimes the best solution isn’t changing the person.

It’s changing the environment.

At Unbound OT, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to safely participate in meaningful activities at home and in the community.

What if we designed homes for real life, instead of waiting until someone needs a modification?

That’s the idea behind universal design. 🏠

Features like:
• Zero-step entrances
• Wider doorways
• Lever handles
• Curbless showers
• Good lighting
• Multiple-height work surfaces
• Easy-to-reach storage

can make a home easier to use for children, adults, older adults, people with disabilities—and the people who care for them.

The best accessibility modifications don’t have to look clinical.

Good design can simply look like good design.

At Unbound OT, we love finding practical ways to make spaces more functional, accessible, and welcoming.

Your energy is a resource.

And when you’re living with chronic illness, disability, pain, or fatigue, that resource may be limited.

Occupational therapy can help you look at where your energy is going and find ways to spend it on the things that matter most.

Think:

Prioritize. Plan. Pace. Position. Simplify.

Maybe sitting to prepare a meal means you have enough energy left to enjoy dinner with your family.

Maybe using a rolling laundry basket means you can do laundry without exhausting yourself.

Maybe taking a rest break before you’re completely exhausted helps you stay active later.

Energy conservation isn’t “doing less.”

It’s making room for what matters.

Pain does not always equal gain.

For people living with chronic pain, the goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate every sensation of discomfort before participating in life.

Sometimes the focus is learning how to:
• Pace activities
• Recognize early signs of overexertion
• Modify tasks
• Protect vulnerable joints
• Use adaptive equipment
• Alternate demanding and easier activities
• Build sustainable routines

Occupational therapy can help you find ways to participate in the things that matter while respecting your body’s limits.

Your life shouldn’t have to stop because something hurts.

And you shouldn’t have to hurt more just to prove you’re trying.

Accessibility isn’t only about ramps and grab bars.

Communication access matters, too. 👂

For people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, everyday environments can create barriers when important information is communicated only through sound.

Simple changes can make a difference:
• Face the person when speaking
• Reduce background noise when possible
• Use captions
• Provide written information
• Make visual alerts available
• Ask the person what communication method works best for them

Good accessibility starts with one simple question:

“What would make this easier for you?”

🍂 October is here! 🍂

Did you know October is packed with awareness topics that connect closely to occupational therapy?

This month, we recognize and bring awareness to:

🧠 ADHD Awareness — supporting executive function, routines, organization, and participation in everyday life.

📖 Dyslexia Awareness — recognizing that people may process and interact with information differently and may benefit from individualized strategies and environmental supports.

🦴 Bone & Joint Health — promoting healthy movement, joint protection, safe activity, and strategies for maintaining independence.

🧠 Mental Health Awareness — because mental health can affect sleep, routines, relationships, work, self-care, and participation in the activities that give life meaning.

👁️ Blindness & Vision Awareness — recognizing how vision changes can affect safety, mobility, and independence at home and in the community.

🎃 And, of course, October is also a great time to talk about fall prevention and home safety!

At Unbound OT, we believe awareness should lead to action.

Sometimes that action is learning a new strategy.
Sometimes it’s using adaptive equipment.
Sometimes it’s changing the environment.
And sometimes it’s simply asking for help.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to safely participate in the activities and environments that matter to them.

Follow along this month as we explore ways occupational therapy can help remove barriers and support independence. 💙

❤️ World Heart Day.

Heart health can affect much more than cardiovascular function. Fatigue, reduced endurance, shortness of breath, weakness, and changes in activity tolerance can make everyday tasks feel harder.

Occupational therapy can help people find ways to safely manage daily activities while working within their energy limits.

That might include:
⚡ Energy conservation
⏰ Activity pacing
🪑 Strategic rest breaks
🏠 Simplifying routines
🧺 Modifying household tasks
❤️ Returning to meaningful activities

You don’t always have to choose between doing everything and doing nothing.

Sometimes the answer is learning how to do the things that matter in a way that works better for your body.
