In the early 1990s, Disney offered a 13-year-old boy $2 million to sing in an animated movie.

His mother turned it down.

More than three decades later, her decision is still making him money.

The boy was Jason Weaver, a young performer from Chicago who had already attracted attention playing Michael Jackson in the television miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream.

Disney wanted him to provide the singing voice of young Simba in The Lion King.

According to Weaver, the studio offered approximately $2 million for his work.

For a family from Chicago, it was an extraordinary amount of money.

But his mother, Marilyn “Kitty” Haywood, saw something the executives might not have expected.

She understood the music business.

A professional singer who had worked with Aretha Franklin, Haywood knew how royalties could turn a successful recording into a source of income lasting decades.

She also knew Disney’s history.

The company regularly rereleased its animated classics, introducing them to new generations of children. Its recent successes, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, had demonstrated the enormous commercial potential of animated musicals.

Haywood began thinking about her son’s future.

What would happen when Jason was 40? Would he still receive money from a movie that might continue selling for decades?

A single payment, however enormous, would eventually be gone.

So she negotiated.

Instead of accepting the reported $2 million outright, she secured approximately $100,000 upfront and a continuing royalty agreement.

Jason recorded the songs “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Hakuna Matata.”

When The Lion King premiered in 1994, it became a worldwide phenomenon.

The soundtrack sold millions of copies. The film returned to theaters, reached new audiences through home video and streaming, and became one of Disney’s most enduring properties.

And the royalty checks kept arriving.

In a 2019 interview, Weaver revealed that his earnings had already exceeded the original $2 million offer.

He was still receiving payments decades after recording the songs as a child.

His mother had negotiated something far more valuable than a single Hollywood paycheck.

She had secured a continuing financial interest in her son’s work.

Today, millions recognize the voice of young Simba.

But behind that voice was a mother who understood that her son’s talent deserved to keep earning long after the recording session ended.

Disney offered her child a fortune.

She negotiated for his future.
