You’re not gonna believe this! And I’m not using that as a colloquial phrase, being dramatic in conversation. You literally are about to read this and no matter how much medical FACT I put in it, you won’t believe me. Probably call me a liar. Watch.
When you shave hair, it DOES NOT permanently become thicker and darker. (see? Why are you shaking your head?) This medical myth was debunked by Dermatologists back in 1928, yet almost 100 years later, still it lives on! “But, Dr. Liar, er, excuse me. Dr. Kirk, I can SEE that it comes back thicker and darker. Explain that!” Happy to. What you are witnessing is a PARTIAL truth. Shaving something doesn’t doom you to a permanent life amongst the apes. Put away the bananas and allow me to explain.
Three reasons why this myth hangs around: 1) New hair is coarse. See, hairs all grow from a follicle that involves a sebaceous (sweat) gland. As you perspire, the oil from your body is projected onto the hair, coating and protecting it. Like any moisturizing, it makes the hair soft and pliable. New hair hasn’t had a chance yet! So, yes, it may seem “thicker” at first, but this coarseness goes away in a day or two. 2) Hair is darker before it is exposed to the elements. Sunlight, soap, shampoos, lotions, etc. etc. all lighten your hair. Again, the brand new hair that is peeking it’s turtle head out of it’s follicle shell hasn’t experienced this world yet. So, yes, new hair may be darker at first, but lightens within a few days. 3) Perception. When you mow your lawn, you get a beautiful sight of pristine, Camden Yards-level grass. And when the first sprigs and dandelions pop up, it’s tragic! Once you have the picture of smooth in your mind, the new growth is sinful! Such is your skin. A clean shaven area is glorious. And new growth insults your mind’s eye worse than normal.
Let’s face it. God blessed us with hair covered bodies. Some of y’all got an extra scoop of that blessing. And how you landscape your temple is up to you and whatever Deacon body runs your day-to-day. But the old medical myth that leads one to say “Oh gosh, don’t shave that! It will come back darker and thicker!” needs to be put to rest. But, like I said at the start: you don’t believe me.
Yours in Health and Christ,
Dr. Liar Pants on Fire Kirk
