Play isn’t just play. It’s how kids learn everything from their first words to problem-solving, confidence, and communication. 🎯

When I sit on the floor with a child, we aren’t “just playing.” We’re building language skills, expanding vocabulary, practicing turn-taking, and encouraging them to express thoughts and feelings all through simple, natural interaction. 🧩🧸

And here’s my favorite part: you don’t need fancy or expensive toys to make it work. Your child’s curiosity is the best therapy tool you’ll ever have. Whether it’s stacking blocks, playing pretend, or tossing a ball, every moment of play offers an opportunity for growth. 💬

If you’re looking for some fun ideas that turn playtime into meaningful learning, I put together a whole list for you on my blog ➡️ Fun & Foundations: Games that Shape Lifelong Learning in Speech Therapy: https://www.foundationcommunication.org/post/fun-foundations-games-that-shape-lifelong-learning-in-speech-therapy.

What’s one toy or game your child keeps going back to right now? 🎲

Behind every child's progress in speech and language is a village of supporters: parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists working tirelessly to nurture growth. 🙌

As National Speech-Language-Hearing Month comes to a close, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who play a role in this journey. Your dedication, patience, and love make all the difference. Thank you for being the champions our children need. 💞👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Catching a speech or language delay early makes a real difference 🗣️. The earlier a child gets support, the more progress they can make during the years their brain is growing the fastest.

If something has been on your mind about your child's communication, a free screening is the easiest first step. It's play-based, low pressure, and gives you a clear picture of where your child is 💙💚.

Kids with apraxia need frequent, intensive, individual speech therapy from an experienced SLP and the more severely a child is affected, the greater that need 🎯.

Therapy for CAS is focused on giving children a high number of opportunities to practice planning, programming, and producing accurate speech movements 🗣️. Many children will also work on other language and communication skills, and some will use sign language or a communication device while their speech continues to build. As children improve and most do with the right therapy, the intensity can be adjusted over time 💙💚.

Parents play a critical role too. Staying highly involved, practicing at home, and modeling patience for others around your child gives them more opportunities to practice than therapy alone ever could. And the support of family, friends, and teachers, not pressuring, giving time and affirming every effort matters more than most people realize.

Even very young children with CAS are often aware of how hard speaking is for them. The right professional support combined with the love and patience of the people around them is what helps them persist and ultimately find success.

What does your support system look like for your child right now?

One of the best (and easiest!) ways to boost speech at home? Get moving!

Kids with apraxia—and really, all little ones working on speech—learn best when their whole body is involved. Movement helps their brain process motor plans for speech, and it keeps them engaged and having fun. 🎯

Try this:
Hop down the hallway saying “hop, hop, hop!”
Zoom cars across the floor with a big “go, go, go!”
Bounce on the couch cushions—“up, up, up!”

These aren’t just playful moments… they’re chances to get tons of speech practice without it feeling like “work.” Repetitive, simple movements help reinforce sounds and words—and you don’t need fancy tools to make it happen. Just you, your kiddo, and a little creativity.

What’s one way your child loves to move around the house? Let’s turn it into speech practice today!

When your child lights up over something they love, speech and language often come more easily right along with it. 🧸💬

A favorite toy, a pretend game, a train, a set of bugs, a baby doll, a puzzle. Those are the moments where connection is already there. And when connection is there, talking, describing, turn-taking, and sharing ideas have more room to grow.

That is one of the reasons play matters so much in speech therapy. It meets your child where their attention already is and turns that interest into meaningful communication.

At home, it can be as simple as joining in, noticing what has their attention, and talking with them about what they are doing. Little moments like that can hold so much value.

What is your child loving most right now?

What Speech Looks Like at 4–5 Years Old 🌟

Ages 4 to 5 are full of big leaps in communication—and it’s honestly amazing to watch 💬

At this age, your child might be telling simple stories, using detailed sentences, or starting to understand more complex directions. They’re describing things with more clarity, answering who/what/where questions, and starting to be understood by people outside the family.

And that’s a big one—by 4 to 5, most children can be understood by others about 75–100% of the time. If that isn’t happening yet, it’s a good time to check in.

You can view the full 4–5 year milestone checklist here: https://www.asha.org/public/developmental-milestones/communication-milestones-4-to-5-years/

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is rare—only about 1 in 1,000 kids are diagnosed. But when it is CAS, early diagnosis and the right kind of therapy can change everything. 💙💚

Not all speech therapy works the same way. Kids with apraxia need something much more specific—intensive, motor-based therapy that helps their brain learn how to plan and say words. This usually means 2–4 sessions a week, with lots of repetition, movement, and support from a speech therapist who truly understands CAS. 🧠💬

One of the first things we focus on is helping your child build a functional vocabulary—words that actually matter to them. That means we’re not drilling random flashcards. We’re choosing words they want to say... like favorite foods, pets, toys, and people. Once those early words are in place, we build short phrases that help them connect and feel understood.

The earlier we start, the stronger the outcomes can be. Confidence grows when communication works—and that’s what we’re always aiming for.

If you’re navigating a new diagnosis (or wondering if your child might need an evaluation), I’m always here to answer questions. Drop them below or send me a message—I know how overwhelming it can feel, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. 💬
