I’ve been treating Lyme disease for over 20 years. I’ve also lived inside it myself.

Ticks are looking for warm, hidden places to attach. And most people check the spots that are easy to see (arms, legs) while missing the ones ticks actually prefer.

Scalp. Behind the ears. Armpits. Waistband. Behind the knees. Between the toes.

These are the zones that get missed in a quick self-check, and they’re exactly where ticks tend to go.

After any time outdoors (hiking, yard work, even just the dog park) do a full check. These spots first.

The Lyme rash doesn’t look the same on every skin tone. And that gap is costing people diagnoses.

On darker skin, the classic bullseye can show up darker, more bruise-like, or barely visible at all, and when the textbook picture doesn’t match what’s actually on someone’s skin, the diagnosis gets missed or delayed.

This is the same pattern I talk about constantly: symptoms dismissed because they don’t fit what a doctor was trained to look for.

Patients usually think that Lyme disease has one standard treatment protocol.

Most people picture a large, easy-to-spot tick.

The one doing the most damage right now is the nymph stage, about the size of a poppy seed, and most active from May through July.

Its size is exactly why it’s dangerous: easy to miss, which means longer attachment time and higher transmission risk.

A full-body check after time outdoors matters more this time of year than almost any other.

Women with Lyme are often told it’s anxiety. Men are often told nothing at all, because they never bring it up.

The pattern looks different, but the outcome is the same: by the time either group gets taken seriously, more systems have usually been affected.
