About Stillwater Hospice Helena

Locally owned, we are redefining hospice care by providing a combination of professional medical care and an outstanding support network designed to meet the needs of our patients and their families. We take the time to educate you on what hospice is, how it benefits those we work with, and how we help make every moment count. At its most basic, hospice care encomp

asses the services needed to maintain the comfort and dignity of a person whose life is limited. At Stillwater Hospice, however, we believe hospice care is far more than that. It is the opportunity to compassionately honor life, instill hope, and allow our patients to make the most of the days, weeks and months they may have left to live. Stillwater Hospice services can be provided to terminally ill people wherever they live. This means a patient living in a nursing facility or long-term care facility can receive specialized visits from our nurses, home health aides, chaplains, social workers, and volunteers, in addition to other care and services provided by the nursing facility. Stillwater Hospice professionals and the nursing home have a written agreement in place for the hospice to serve residents of the facility. Hospice care serves those who have any terminal, or life-ending, condition. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider hospice once “curative” treatments—those designed to restore good health—will no longer be used. Once entering hospice, each patient receives an individualized treatment plan reflecting their personal goals, medical needs, and the level of support required. In our experience, hospice care can positively impact a patient’s spouse, partner, and family as much as it does the patient. We can help reduce stress and worry by providing knowledge, structure, and support.

Hospice care is never the work of just one person.

Nurses, physicians, CNAs, social workers, spiritual counselors, volunteers and bereavement professionals work together to support each patient and family physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Every role matters. Every voice helps shape the plan of care.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”

A gentle Sunday reminder for caregivers:

Rest is not something you earn. It is something you need.

Take a breath. Step outside. Be gentle with yourself today.

This month’s Helena team meeting came with a surprise!

We took a few minutes to celebrate Carissa Taylor, Nurse Practitioner, and thank her for everything she does for our team, our patients, and our community. Breakfast burritos from The Breakfast Club - Helena fueled the celebration, and we spoiled her with goodies from local favorites -sole sisters- , Wild Child Collective , and HO + KO.

The only catch? Carissa was a little late to her own appreciation because she was cheering on her kids as they showed their pigs at the 4-H fair. She even ended up taking the team photo herself!

Supporting families isn’t just what we do at Stillwater Hospice—it’s who we are. We’re grateful for team members like Carissa who show up with that same heart, both at work and at home.

Independence may change over time — but it does not disappear.

One of the biggest misconceptions about hospice is that it takes independence away. In reality, early hospice often helps patients maintain comfort, dignity, and autonomy longer through symptom management and supportive care.

Sometimes independence looks like:

💠 Staying at home

💠 Having pain managed

💠 Conserving energy for meaningful moments

💠 Making personal choices about care

Read more about why early hospice can preserve independence in our July blog — link in bio.

One of the hardest parts of serious illness is not knowing what comes next. Many families feel like they are constantly reacting — the next appointment, medication change, or difficult moment.

Hospice can help bring support to uncertainty.

Instead of navigating it alone, families have a team to call, questions answered, and guidance along the way.

Sometimes peace begins with not carrying everything by yourself.
