Julia Ann Avant Norton, 74, wife of Devon Norton, died on October 15, 2026, at her home in Hemingway, South Carolina.

A daughter of the late James Z. and Eliza Queen Lear Avant, Julia was born on October 18, 1951, in Florence, South Carolina. She built a life centered on family, faith, work, and service to others.

Julia was a graduate of Johnsonville High School and later earned an Associate Degree from Williamsburg Technical College. She worked as a teachers’ aid and bus driver with Florence School District Five.

Julia was a member of Community Free Will Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith in Johnsonville, South Carolina. Over the years, she assisted with Sunday School and led the choir. She enjoyed ministering to others and witnessing through song. She shared her love of and talent for music with many churches throughout her life. Steadfast and faithful in all that she did, Julia devoted much of her time and energy to the work of her church and to encouraging those around her.

Julia loved to cook. She especially enjoyed hosting and preparing meals for large family gatherings. Above all, she loved her family.

In addition to her husband of 50 years, Julia is survived by a daughter, Yuonne Harris; a brother, Chris Avant; a son-in-law, Michael King; and grandchildren: Zachary (Cat O’Connor) Harris, Jenna (Brittany Brumbles) Harris, Conner Norton, and Amanda (Hunter) Walker.

Julia was preceded in death by a daughter, Jo Ann Norton King; a son, Devon Norton, II; four brothers; four sisters; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel located at 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will take place in the Eaddy-Ford Cemetery, 481 S Eaddy-Ford Road, Johnsonville, South Carolina, 29555.

Terry Douglas Johnson, 71, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.

Terry was a loving husband, Daddy, Pappy, brother, and friend who lived a simple life with hard work, laughter, and love for his family.

Fishing was one of Terry’s greatest joys. For him, there was something special about being out on the water; enjoying quiet moments and doing what he loved…catching brim with his brother-in-law, who was his favorite fishing buddy. Above all, Terry loved his family. He loved his children and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. His family was one of his greatest blessings. The memories they made together will be treasured forever.

Terry is survived by his loving wife, Susan Johnson; his daughter, Brook (Noot) Marlowe; his son, Travis (Katelynn) Johnson; his grandchildren: Lane Marlowe, Jaxon Marlowe, Trey Pring, and Chanzely Johnson; his sister, Vivian Ard; his brother-in-law, Gary Fenters; his special cousin, Curtis Johnson; and a bonus daughter by heart, Amanda Owens, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Pauline Johnson; his brothers: Aurbia Lee Johnson, Leggette Johnson, Ricky Johnson, and William Moses Johnson; and sisters: Mary Taylor, Betty Young, Barbara Poston, and Eva Powers.

The family would like to extend a special and heart-felt thank you to Terry’s close family and friends, Chris Lewis and family, for their love, friendship, and support.

Jack Walter "Jay" Cockfield, Jr., husband of Kathy Cantey Cockfield, 73, died on October 8, 2026, in Charleston, South Carolina, surrounded by his loving family. Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend who dedicated his life to the family he loved.

Jay, as he was known to all, was the son of the late Jackie and Enid Cockfield. He was born on August 18, 1953, in Hemingway, South Carolina, where he grew up and attended school. After graduating from Hemingway High School and attending the University of South Carolina, he returned to Hemingway and carried on the family tradition of farming. This chosen vocation reflected his lifelong connection to the land and nature.

Jay was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed duck and dove hunting. His favorite tradition was his annual dove hunt to kick off the season with his well-known Cockfield Pileau. He loved sports and was a dedicated follower of Gamecock football and baseball. Jay was a regular at Grier’s Grocery where he enjoyed breakfast and lunch with his many friends and neighbors almost daily. Above all, Jay loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time and sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of 43 years, Jay is survived by his daughters, Courtney Cockfield (Todd) Avant and Caroline Cockfield (Nick) Stomski; his grandchildren: Shepherd, Lillian, Sullivan, and Virginia; his brother, Flynn Walton (Costa) Cockfield; his sister, Elizabeth "Libby" (Alec) Bryant; his sister-in-law, Karen Hooks; his brother-in-law, Robin (Suzy) Cantey, Aubrey (Fran) Cantey and his mother-in-law, Juanita Cantey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jay will be remembered for a life closely tied to family, nature, faith and generosity. His memory remains with those who knew him and shared in his life.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 17, 2026 before funeral services.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at Ebenezer Methodist Church, 1760 Pope Road, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will take place in the Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery, located behind Ebenezer Methodist Church, immediately following the funeral service. Barbara Louise Powell Eaddy, 82, wife of Steven Eaddy, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026, at her home in Johnsonville, South Carolina.

A daughter of the late P.P. and Emma Davis Powell Eaddy; Louise, as she was known to all, was born on August 6, 1944, in Hemingway, South Carolina. She built a life centered on education, high standards, and steady commitment to the things that mattered to her. Louise completed her high school education early at Johnsonville High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. After graduation from Lander, Louise, at the age of 20, began her teaching career. While teaching, she continued her personal education during the summers in order to earn a Master’s Degree from Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee. Those early years formed the foundation for a career in teaching that extended for more than 50 years.

Louise devoted her professional life to the teaching of English Literature and Speech. She spent the majority of her career at Johnsonville High School in Florence School District Five, where her work as an educator left a lasting impression on generations of students. She also taught for many years at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree, as well as at Ron McNair Middle School in Florence School District Three and Creek Bridge High School in Marion School District Seven. Across those classrooms and schools, she became known for the seriousness with which she approached her work and the expectations she set. She held high standards for herself and high expectations for her students. Many students summed up her impact in a simple and memorable way: “When you left her classroom, you knew how to write a paper.”

That practical assessment speaks clearly to the kind of teacher Louise was. She taught with conviction, and she approached her work directly and without pretense. She was described as a straight-forward lady who did all that she did with conviction and who followed her heart in all that she did. In the classroom, that meant discipline, clarity, and purpose. Over the span of five decades in education, those qualities became part of the legacy she left in the schools and communities she served.

Outside of her profession, Louise remained closely connected to the interests and activities she enjoyed most. She loved reading and spent time playing games on her phone. She was an avid Braves fan and followed the team with enthusiasm. She also loved attending the sporting events of her children, a commitment that reflected how faithfully she showed up for the people and moments that were important to her.

Her involvement in community life also included many years of service as Treasurer of Prosser Field Recreation in Johnsonville. In that role, as in other areas of her life, she gave her time and attention with consistency. She was raised in Prospect Independent Methodist Church, an early part of the foundation of her life.

Louise’s life was marked by dedication to education, consistency in principle, and a clear sense of how she believed things should be done. Her work reached far beyond lesson plans and classrooms, living on in the writing, discipline, and learning she demanded and helped shape in others. She will be remembered with respect by those who knew her and by the many students whose lives passed through her classroom.

In addition to her husband of 50 years, Louise is survived by her son, Christopher (Shanna) Eaddy; grandchildren: Landon Eaddy, Gavin Eaddy, Tynleigh Eaddy, Ace Eaddy, Skye Eaddy, Taylor Joyner, EJ Sanders, Cassie (Lucas) Weeks, and Adrianna Shealy; four great-grandchildren; sisters: Cerise Lyerly, Sonya Cordina, and Syllal Edgar; and a special nephew, Eddie Edgar as well as special friends, Genese Merdith and Sheila Martin, who were faithful helpers with her care over the past several years.

In addition to her parents, Louise was predeceased by her son, Jonathan Eaddy.

The Eaddy Family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice for the care and compassion that they have provided, not only to Louise, but to her family as well.

Ponnie Michelle Gaster, 63, of Pamplico, South Carolina, passed away at her home in Pamplico.

Born October 26,1962, in Florence, South Carolina, Michelle was a daughter of the late Ponnie Gaster and Annie Lee Wise Gaster of Florence, South Carolina.

Michelle was a retired Speech-Language Pathologist who dedicated her professional life to helping children across South Carolina communicate. Michelle was also a loving daughter who spent time helping manage the family business while attending college and later caring for her parents for many years. In her spare time, Michelle enjoyed visiting the South Carolina beaches, visiting family and friends, and attending concerts. She was also a member of Dawsey United Methodist Church in Florence. Michelle is survived by her sister Melva G. McIntyre (Dave) of Davidson, North Carolina, and two nephews David McIntyre III of Davidson, North Carolina, and Alexander McIntyre of Mooresville, North Carolina. She is also survived by her loving cousins and a special aunt.

A private memorial service was held October 10th, 2026 at Morris Funeral Home’s Chapel in Hemingway, South Carolina.

Queen Collins Langley, 84, widow of the late Donald Randolph Langley, passed away on September 7, 2026, at her home in Johnsonville, South Carolina. She was born on September 17, 1941, in Conway, South Carolina.

Queen was a daughter of the late Theodore Jackson (T.J) and Alice Young Collins. She was known for the quiet pleasures of reading, watching television, and bird watching.

She is survived by her sons Randolph (Yoko) Langley, Phil Langley, and Brad (Gina) Langley; grandchildren Erica Langley, Marissa Langley, Nicole (E.J. Wheeler) Langley, Adam (Carsyn) Langley, Alicia Langley, Luke Langley, Sarah Langley, and Kelsey Langley; brothers Terry (Kathy) Collins, Winston (Linda) Collins, Sr.

She is predeceased by a daughter-in-law Sharon Langley, seven brothers, and three sisters.

Graveside services will be directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway SC, Saturday September 12, 2026, at 11:00 AM, in the garden of devotion cemetery 800 S. Georgetown Hwy, Johnsonville SC, 29555.

The family will greet friends at the cemetery 30 minutes prior to the service.

Dora Lee Stone Durant, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 in Pamplico, South Carolina.

Born in Vox, South Carolina, on March 25, 1928, she was the second oldest of nine children born to Marvin D. Stone and Thelma Cox Stone. Two of her siblings, David and Devoe, were deceased at birth. Their mother gave each of her children a name beginning with the letter “D”: Doris, Dora, Daisy, David, Devoe, Donald, Deloris, Diane, and Doolittle.

After graduating from Johnsonville High School in 1942, she attended Florence Business College. While there, she worked at the candy counter at the Colonial Theatre in Florence, where she met Gordon Lynsford Berg. They married on January 30, 1947, and had two daughters, Dena and Geri, before Gordon’s death in 1951.

In 1954, she married J.B. Davis and became the owner and operator of Davis Grocery in Gresham. She was beloved by the community, especially neighborhood children who knew she might slip them a piece of candy. She also often helped neighbors with their short-form tax returns. After J.B.’s death in 1979, she married Simon “Dick” Durant on December 1, 1984. During their years together, they were very active in their Florence bowling leagues, and she enjoyed traveling to cities across the country with a women’s group from Florence, indulging her adventurous spirit.

Faith and fellowship remained important throughout her life. She and Dick devotedly attended Vox United Methodist Church, where they helped prepare meals, worked on building and repairs, and responded to the needs of their church and community. They loved the Lord and always strove to help God’s people however they could.

Those who knew her well will remember her love of word games, her sense of humor, and her gift for making people feel remembered. She sent handwritten cards and notes for birthdays, graduations, and simply to let family and friends know she was thinking of them. She was especially proud of her nieces and nephews and made sure they knew how much she loved them.

She is survived by her daughters, Dena Brown (Scott Brown) of Pamplico, SC, and Gerilynn Seiveno (Gene Seiveno) of Pawleys Island, SC; her grandchildren, Joey Miller of Florence, SC, Lyndsey Gore (Keith Baldwin) of Arlington, VA, and Carson Brown (Jennifer Brown) of Dunn, NC; her great-grandchildren, Hailey and Emma Brown; her beloved brother, Doolittle Stone; and many treasured nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband’s

Gordon Lynsford Berg, J.B. Davis, and Simon “Dick” Durant; her parents, Marvin Doris Stone and Thelma Cox Stone; her brother, Donald Stone; and her sisters, Diane Marsh of Johnsonville, SC; Daisy Calcutt of Florence, SC; Deloris Brock of Hartsville, SC; and Doris Moore of Lakeland, FL.

Dora will be remembered for her love of family, her quick wit and humor, her adventurous spirit, and the many thoughtful ways she showed people they mattered.

Jennifer Iva Powell Burbage, 50, wife of James “Champ” Allen Survay Powell, Jr, of Andrews, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026 at her home in Andrews, South Carolina.

Born on May 1, 1976, in Georgetown, South Carolina, Jennifer was the daughter of the late James William Burbage and Debbie Jean Burbage.

Jennifer was a homemaker who loved tending the house and family. Her days were centered on the people closest to her, and she found happiness in the routines of home life and in time shared with those she loved. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandbabies, a part of life that remained close to her heart.

She also found pleasure in simple pastimes. A lover of the outdoors, Jennifer especially enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and swimming. During her quiet time, Jennifer liked reading a variety of Stephen King books. Enjoying their unique ugliness, she also enjoyed collecting gnomes. Jennifer also spent many hours playing video games, her favorite being MineCraft which she played with daughter Stephany and her husband.

In addition to her loving husband of 30 years, Jennifer is survived by her mother, Debbie Jean Burbage; daughters, Candice Powell and Stephany Powell; her son, Leland (Sadie Young) Powell; her grandchildren, Harley Quinn, Daphne Williams, and Leon Williams; and her siblings, James Burbage, Jessie Burbage, Jackie West, Tina Sumter, and Ashley Forbes.

Jennifer was predeceased by her father and a brother, Barney Burbage.

A daughter of the late Robert Lee and Elease Cribb Anderson, Mary was born on August 12, 1946, in Hemingway, South Carolina. She spent her life rooted in the community where she was born.

Mary worked in the molding department of Tupperware Manufacturing in Hemingway. During her free time, she enjoyed sewing, yard and garden work, tending flowers, and going to yard sales. In addition, she enjoyed attending Owens Swamp Church. These interests were a meaningful part of her life and reflected the simple pleasures she appreciated.

Mary’s life was closely centered on family. Described as “a loving mother and grandmother who was like a grandmama to all of the children in the family,” she found her greatest joy in raising her children and grandchildren. Mary took special pleasure in the everyday moments shared with them.

Mary is survived by sons, Ken Collins, Jr. and Jeff (Julie) Collins; daughter, April (Derek) Wise; grandchildren: Kenneth E.
