Sometimes behavior gets harder before progress becomes obvious. Remember, old behaviors may have years of reinforcement behind them. Keep noticing and reinforcing the new behavior so it has a chance to become the easier, more effective choice.

One of the hardest parts of raising independent kids is recognizing when our help is actually taking away an opportunity to practice.

It’s often faster to answer the question, send the email, fix the mistake, bring the forgotten item, solve the disagreement, or simply do the task ourselves.

But independence is built in those small moments when we give kids enough space to think:

What should I do?
How can I fix this?
Who could I ask?
What happens if I forget?
Can I figure this out?

Of course, children still need support, guidance, boundaries, and help with things that are beyond their developmental abilities. The goal isn’t to leave them on their own, it’s to notice when they’re capable of taking the next step themselves.

Sometimes good parenting looks like helping.

✨And sometimes it looks like waiting long enough for your child to discover that they can handle it.

Sometimes the most powerful reinforcer is the interaction itself. Notice the small wins. Respond with genuine enthusiasm. Be specific about what went well. Your attention can help shape the behaviors and skills you want to see grow.

Challenging behavior isn’t always about disrespect. Often, it continues because somewhere along the way, it worked to meet a need.

Instead of asking, “How do I make this stop?” start with, “What is this behavior accomplishing?”

Understanding the need gives us a better place to teach from.
