Awesome Accomplishment
11-year-old Brandon Bakke from Fargo, North Dakota, was adopted as a baby and eventually became curious about his biological father. After asking questions, his adoptive mother, Brandy, searched Facebook and connected with Brandon’s biological sister, Tiffany. That’s when they learned heartbreaking news - his father, Terrence, had passed away in Chicago the year before at 56 years old and had been buried in an unmarked grave because the family couldn’t afford a headstone.
Instead of simply mourning someone he never had the chance to meet, Brandon decided to honor his father’s memory. He spent his entire summer mowing lawns for neighbors and strangers, raising $400 to help pay for a memorial. When Dakota Monument heard Brandon’s story, the company stepped in and donated the headstone, even allowing him to help design it himself.
Brandon chose a design featuring a heart and two hands holding a bowl of soup after learning from Tiffany that his father loved feeding the homeless. Even though Brandon only knew his father through stories, he found a meaningful way to celebrate the kind of man he was.
Inspired by the experience, Brandon later launched a lawn care and snow removal business called “Mowing and Blowing for a Purpose,” using it to help other families afford memorials for loved ones. When asked what he thought his father would say about everything he had done, Brandon replied, If he could se it, he would be proud of me.”
Despite never meeting his father, Brandon made sure his memory would never be forgotten - showing a level of compassion and maturity far beyond his years. Shoutout to him 💔🕊️
