Nobody has ever gotten a coat zipped, a lunchbox packed, and two kids out the door by 7:52 while also letting the 4-year-old try it himself. The clock wins.

Independence comes together in the slow parts of the week, the ones that were already going to take a while.

Underneath the zipper and the cup and the buttons, it's hand strength, coordination, and knowing where your body is in space. That's what we work on, in sessions that mostly look like play, so the zipper stops being a 20-minute negotiation and starts being something he just does.

Every family has one. Maybe it's the blanket that isn't called a blanket, the name your kid gave your dog that's not his real name at all, or the word for that one specific snack nobody outside your kitchen would recognize.

That's a word. It means the same thing every time, everyone in the house knows it, and your kid uses it on purpose. That's the exact definition of a word if you ask Webster himself...

School started and suddenly you can see exactly what every other kid in the class can do.

Progress in speech and OT almost never shows up as the big WOW MOMENT first. It shows up unexpectedly, on a Tuesday, in something so small you almost miss it.

It's a new way to say "all done," a question about something he was curious about, or shoes she wanted to put on herself.

It's also how we measure it here, against where a kid was, in the uneventful moments they live everyday.

Some weeks you won't see any of it but it doesnt mean it's not happening.

1️⃣ 101 Barbershop in Henderson calls it their autism barber service, and it's open to disabled kids more broadly. Free, Tuesdays from 12 to 4 by appointment.
2️⃣ Small Steps in Speech, the Orange Effect Foundation, UHCCF, ACT Today, and ATAP all offer grants toward therapy costs.
3️⃣ Be Like Buddy keeps a list of sensory-friendly activities happening around Nevada.
4️⃣ Out & About Southern NV is a community group for AAC users, their families, and their therapists.
5️⃣ Nevada PEP offers support, education, and advocacy for families of kids with disabilities.

Bedtime hits, the house goes quiet, and it is finally your turn to do absolutely nothing for anyone but yourself.

So go ahead and take the pat on the back, mama. You showed up today, and that counts for a lot. 👩‍👧

No one warns you how long you might be the only one tapping that AAC device.

Kids spend that time watching and listening. They are learning what the device sounds like, where the buttons live, and how you use it. 👀

Then one day he taps "all done" on his own, about something he actually wants changed (or really doesn't!)

Say it back out loud. Then honor his request.
That is what encourages him to take the next step and share something else.

You can unclench your jaw here. You'll still tell us about your kid. You'll still go through the history, the words they use, what challenges them.

But you won't be bracing for the part where someone doesn't get it. You'll be talking to people who have met kids like yours and know where to go from here.

Off the table doesn't mean unstructured. Some kids need a lot of support just to get started, and building that in is part of the job. Following your kid is the plan.
