🌿 GBS Positive & Placenta Encapsulation: Let’s Talk About the Facts 🌿

Over the years, we’ve had so many clients who were discouraged — and sometimes genuinely fear-mongered — about choosing placenta encapsulation after testing positive for Group B Strep (GBS).

And we completely understand why. When you’re pregnant or newly postpartum, hearing the words “GBS” and “bacteria” can immediately make you question whether something you were planning is safe for you or your baby.

But this is exactly why education and informed decision-making matter. ❤️

A positive GBS test means that GBS was detected as colonization. It does not automatically mean that you have a GBS infection, nor does it mean that your placenta is infected.

There is an important distinction between GBS colonization and GBS disease.

There has been a CDC-reported case involving an infant who developed recurrent GBS infection in which contaminated placenta capsules were identified as a possible source. That case is important and should not be ignored. At the same time, it was a single case report, not evidence that placenta encapsulation routinely causes GBS infection.

So rather than simply telling a GBS-positive mother, “You can’t encapsulate your placenta,” we believe in giving you the information you need to make an informed decision.

✨ Ask questions.
✨ Understand the potential risks.
✨ Understand how your placenta will be handled and processed.
✨ Ask about sanitation, temperature, preparation methods, cross-contamination prevention, storage, and your provider’s training.
✨ Discuss your individual circumstances with your placenta encapsulation specialist

If you do choose placenta encapsulation, the person handling your placenta and the practices they follow matter.

At From Bump To Babies, we take the handling of your placenta very seriously. We process one placenta at a time, follow bloodborne-pathogen safety protocols, use disposable equipment whenever possible, thoroughly sanitize reusable equipment, and use a preparation method that includes steaming before dehydration.

Most importantly, we don’t believe in making decisions based on fear.

We believe you deserve accurate information, transparency, and the freedom to decide what feels right for you and your family.

If you are GBS positive and considering placenta encapsulation, I kindly invite you to read through our detailed information below and then have a conversation with your healthcare provider so you can make the decision that is right for you.
