Extreme heat is another form of physical stress on the body. Supporting your body through adequate hydration, nutrition, sleep, movement, and regular chiropractic care can be part of a healthy wellness routine.
1. Drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when you're thirsty. By the time you actually feel thirsty, your body could already be experiencing dehydration. If you're sweating heavily or spending extended time outside, replenishing electrolytes is also important.
2. Choose foods that provide both fluids and essential nutrients:
Fruits like watermelon, oranges, berries & cucumbers;
Vegetables like leafy greens;
Good fats & protein like avocado, greek yogurt, eggs, lean, grass-fed meats;
and mineral-rich, whole foods.
3. Replenish with electrolytes. Heavy sweating means you're losing more than water. Sodium and other electrolytes help your body maintain proper fluid balance and support normal muscle and nerve function.
4. Intentionally rest and cool down. Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning. If possible, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and give your body time to recover.
Make water + electrolytes + real food your habit, so you don't power through without giving your body proper support.
Heat exhaustion can cause:
Heavy sweating
Weakness or unusual fatigue
Headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Muscle cramps
Feeling faint
Cool, pale, clammy skin
If these symptoms develop, stop the activity, move somewhere cool, and begin cooling and rehydrating.
And don't forget your nervous system. Chiropractic care can help with symptoms of stress, fatigue, stiffness, neck and back pain, and many other issues!
