Let's talk sunscreen, sun exposure, and skin cancer. These may not be pleasant topics, but they are important. A single sunburn can be dangerous, but it’s the accumulation of exposure over time that increases your risk of developing skin cancer, the most common from of cancer in the United States. Reducing exposure to UV radiation lowers the risk of skin cancer. Although sunscreen is widely recognized as an effective strategy for preventing skin cancer, misconceptions and misinformation about its safety and efficacy continue to circulate, especially on social media. It gets confusing not knowing who to listen to or what to believe. If you have specific concerns or questions, please talk to Dr. Cozart or your dermatologist.

If you know someone in need of food, please let them know about this food distribution tomorrow at the Hendersonville campus of Long Hollow Baptist Church starting at 9:30.

We have 250+ boxes of food that need to go to families in need!

We are asking anyone who is in need or didn't have the chance to get a box today to come by our Hendersonville campus on Saturday, July 11 between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

This is first come, first served. We are not requiring any paperwork or registration. People can just pull through and pick up a box while supplies last.

Help us spread the word!

Are you staying hydrated and drinking enough water?

It can be a tough habit to develop, but it’s definitely worth the effort! Water is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. With summer heat in full swing, it is even more important that you stayed well-hydrated.

If you intend to drink water and you just simply forget to do it throughout the day, set reminders on your phone to take water breaks until it becomes natural for you to do it.

If you just don’t like water, try adding natural flavors like lemon, cucumber, or mint to your water for a refreshing taste.

Dr. Cozart likes to carry a reusable water bottle everywhere he goes to make sure he gets plenty of water.

It is important to know our own history. As part of the Sumner County Museum's passport program a few years ago, we took our kids to visit the Union High Museum. We heard stories of incredible people and learned so much local history during our tour.

On this day in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing 250,000 enslaved people. Juneteenth celebrates freedom, resilience, and the generations who built opportunities from that freedom.

Today, we remember Diora Wylie Vertrees, whose legacy remains an important part of Sumner County’s history.

Born in a log cabin in Sumner County in 1875, ten years after the abolition of slavery, Diora dedicated her life to education and service. The daughter of Halifax Wylie, known as the “Black Hercules of Sumner County,” she attended school at Horn Town and Village Green.

In 1891, Diora earned her teaching certificate and opened her first school in Portland, earning $20 per month. She later attended Roger Williams University and taught at Gallatin’s South Public School, earning $30 per month. Over the course of an extraordinary 54-year career, she educated hundreds of children.

Beyond the classroom, Diora served at First Baptist Church, led the Missionary and Educational Society for 45 years, taught Sunday school for nearly 60 years, and, from 1924 until her death in 1965, gave every Union High School Union High Museum graduate a Bible.

This Juneteenth, we honor Diora and those who came before her, and fought for a future they themselves were too often denied.
