It's been a little more than 5 years since I wrote and published this little book. A lot has happened since then, which led me to update the last chapter and republish!
Surrender is no easy thing. As a therapist, I am working with people daily who, in some way or another, are trying to surrender something...addiction, grief, control, perfectionism, relationships etc. Even our nervous systems try to step up, sending signals of anxiety and warning, trying to control the outcome of so much in our lives. Overthinking, intrusive thoughts, planning, predicting, and torturous thought loops are all part of our body, mind, and spirit realizing that we are not in control of much and yet we try to be.
This is the beauty of learning Who God is and that surrendering this inner fight for control to Him is the main path to relief and rest. This book connects Biblical stories of surrender moments with my own. It's still a daily choice to follow God with my hands open to Him, and it will be until I see Him face to face. But the process of learning the value of surrender has been more than worth it!

Learning to Surrender: A marriage and family therapist’s experience in learning to surrender trauma, healing, and what comes next.

Many, including myself, have experienced one or more of the losses detailed here in this image. God is close to the broken-hearted, and He knows we need to grieve and hope within community. If you are a bereaved mother in need of support, I pray you will reach out of isolation. This is essential for healing and living forward.

What might happen if you moved a little slower today? I mean that literally. Walk slower to the car. Do a chore with slower movements. Get your mail slower. What might you notice in your body and mind that if you just moved slower today? We have a lot to do. Yes. But our rushing sends signals to our nervous system that in turn sends rush signals out. Slowing your body can slow your inner world too. Try it. See what you notice.

I love my job...so I protect it. I protect it from burnout by making sure my week includes lots of self-care (working out, reading, hot baths, prayer, crafting, etc.). Even things we love can burn us out, so think of self-care as a protective necessity to keep doing what you love, being with people you care about, and continuing productivity!

Sometimes, our fears or expectations of what therapy will be like stop us from starting or continuing. Therapy isn't magic, but it should be movement toward your goals, healing, new strategies, and discovery...all with a safe person, in a safe place, in safe ways.
