đź’š Words matter. People matter more.
The way we talk about mental health, su***de, and substance use can open a door to connection—or leave someone feeling judged and alone.
At Unlikely Journeys, we encourage language that recognizes the person beyond their struggles:
• Instead of “attention-seeking,” consider “reaching out for support.”
• Instead of “addict” or “junkie,” say “person with a substance use disorder.”
• Instead of “committed su***de,” say “died by su***de.”
• Instead of “clean” or “dirty,” describe substance use directly, without assigning someone a moral label.
We also respect how people choose to describe their own experiences and recovery.
Reducing stigma means listening with curiosity, challenging assumptions, and making room for honest conversations.
You don’t have to understand someone’s entire journey to treat them with dignity.
Whatever someone is navigating, they deserve compassion, connection, and access to support. Your words can help make that possible.
