Today we honor Juneteenth, a day that marks freedom, resilience, and the ongoing work of healing.

At Heart & Mind Therapy, we believe healing is relational. It happens in connection, in being seen, and in communities that hold space for both joy and grief at the same time. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom and healing are not single moments but ongoing processes, carried forward generation after generation.

We're grateful for the resilience of Black communities and the wisdom passed down through families and traditions. Today we reflect, we listen, and we celebrate.

The play therapy world lost a giant last week. Dr. Garry Landreth, founder of the Center for Play Therapy at the University of North Texas, leaves behind a legacy that shaped generations of therapists, parents, and children.

His words "Toys are children's words and play is their language" changed how so many of us understand kids. He taught us that beneath behavior is communication, beneath resistance is meaning, and beneath struggle is a child longing to be understood.

Amy Reamer reflects on his influence and what it means to put relationship first, before fixing, teaching, or correcting. Read her full tribute here: https://www.heartmindrva.com/post/honoring-dr-garry-landreth-it-begins-with-relationship

Not everyone who helps people heal is a therapist.

Some of the most important members of our team never sit in the therapy room. They answer the phone when someone finally works up the courage to reach out for help. They welcome clients, solve problems, and help families navigate care from the very first contact.

At Heart & Mind Therapy, we believe every role contributes to regulation, connection, resilience, and healthier relationships. We're currently looking for a Client Care & Intake Coordinator to join our team.

If you're highly organized, love helping people, and want work that genuinely matters, we'd love for you to learn more.

You don't have to be a therapist to make a difference. You just have to care.

Celebrating sweet new beginnings at Heart & Mind Therapy 💛

Last week, we gathered to celebrate the upcoming arrival of a very special little one joining one of our Heart & Mind families soon. It was such a meaningful time filled with connection, laughter, and sharing stories about family traditions, sibling adventures, and the moments that shaped us growing up.

We are sending so much love and excitement to Angelika and her husband as they prepare to welcome their baby in the weeks ahead. We can’t wait to meet this newest little member of the Heart & Mind extended family! 🍼✨

What does a game of Jenga have to do with brain development? More than you might think.
Each block in a Jenga tower depends on the stability of the blocks beneath it. The developing brain works the same way. Early experiences lay the foundation for regulation, connection, learning, and problem-solving. When those foundational blocks are disrupted by chronic stress, trauma, or neglect, we can't build lasting change by only addressing what we see at the top of the tower. We have to go back to the foundation first.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Month is wrapping up, and we want to leave you with something to carry into June.

5 things every child needs to feel emotionally safe:

1️⃣ A regulated adult nearby
2️⃣ Predictable routines
3️⃣ Permission to have big feelings
4️⃣ Repair after rupture (it's not about perfection)
5️⃣ Play — real, unstructured, child-led play

Save this. Share it. Come back to it on the hard days.

He's trying.
You're trying.

And something still isn't connecting.

This is the moment that activates so many educators and helping professionals.

But what if behavior isn't the whole story?

Understanding what's underneath can change how we respond — and what actually helps.

Join us July 17 for "What Adoptees Need Most" with Isaac Etter.
