As Memorial Day approaches, we’re grateful for the opportunity to help recognize and remember the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Alexander M. Hilts of Herkimer passed away February 13, 1910 at the age of 73.
Mr. Hilts was born in Herkimer to Nicholas and Nancy Shutt Hilts in 1836, the fifth of six children.
Mr. Hilts never married and he was the village lamplighter before Herkimer got an electric system.
Mr. Hilts was well known in this neck of the woods though. According to an article in the Utica Observer Dispatch from October of 1860,
Pennsylvania held its State election in October immediately preceding the General Election for President in November and political excitement was at white heat and all eyes were on
Pennsylvania awaiting the result of the election, as it was considered to be a forerunner of what would follow in the November election. The news came that the Republicans had swept the State and the majority of Herkimer's electors proceeded to celebrate by bringing out a large cannon located on Mary Street. The Big Gun was manned by Alexander Hilts, Henry Stansel and William Dwyer. Hilts and Stansel had charge of loading the cannon while Dwyer did the firing. After the cannon had belched forth several times in the celebration of the victory, Hilts and Hansel were in the act of reloading and ramming the charge home, there was a premature explosion that struck terror in the hearts of everyone watching. Stansel was almost instantly killed and Hilts’ arm was shattered. The hardwood ramrod was driven 150 feet in the air through the side of the Waverly House barn striking a rafter and lodging there.
