A very special day of breathwork, connection, and healing. ❤️

Yesterday, I got to experience a breathwork class unlike any other I’ve taken before. Susan Dunn is an intuitive, caring, and skilled body worker and quantum breathwork facilitator. The level of healing and somatic/emotional release I experienced was so profound. The level of care and attention to detail she puts into this class is felt. From the immersive headphones to the way she sets up the class and creates an environment of safety, I can’t recommend her class enough.

I’m so grateful to have therapist friends who value self-care and other forms of healing as deeply as I do. It was so restorative to take a day trip to Palm Springs together for this experience and then be able to debrief and share about our experiences over dinner. These two ladies are forces of nature and have so much wisdom. I’m so grateful to have had this experience with them. So important to make sure we take care of ourselves and do our own work as therapists 🌱🫶✨

This morning, I had the honor of being a part of an important discussion on the invisible burden of food allergies, held by .allergy.institute 🩵

I feel so grateful to have been able to share from a clinical social worker perspective the mental and social impacts of food allergies. Thank you to .md .tells.all for your extremely valuable perspectives and conversation.

If you missed the webinar, no worries! A YouTube link with a recording will be made available soon. Again, I’m so thankful for the opportunity to spread awareness especially during Food Allergy and Mental Health Awareness month. If you’d like to connect with me, feel free to shoot me a DM or reach out through my website in my bio. 🫶

It’s been a while since I’ve shared about the monthly virtual support group I facilitate for parents of children with food allergies, and since it’s happening tomorrow, figured it was time for a reminder!

If you’re looking for a supportive, welcoming circle of parents who get it, then look no further. This group runs on the second Wednesday of each month from 5-6pm PST. Each month, we get to know one another and enter a guided discussion around various aspects of managing food allergies. At the end of each session, folks will receive a recap of the meeting complete with resources shared by other members.

As a note, this is a peer-support space, meaning that it is not a replacement for therapy. Additionally, this group is not a replacement for medical advice. Please seek medical advice from your doctor or allergist.

If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a DM, text, or email! 🩵

The grief of spontaneity is real and often not talked about.

This Mental Health and Food Allergy Awareness Month, I’m reflecting on how much energy goes into simply staying safe around food, including the planning, the scanning, and the quiet “no thank you” when others eat without a second thought.

It’s not just logistically tiring, but it’s emotionally heavy.

So my gentle question for anyone navigating food allergies (or caring for someone with them), is: How much of your Type A planning, your people-pleasing, your hypervigilance, or your worry is actually you and how much is a brilliant, necessary strategy to stay safe?

Both can be true at once. You can be grateful for the strategies that protect you and grieve the carefree spontaneity that you don’t get to have.

Holding space for that see-saw today. 🩵

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month and Mental Health Month, which means it’s time to share some facts about food allergies and the mental health impact of them. 🩵

If you are struggling, you don’t have to carry this alone. Feel free to reach out to me if you’re in the US and interested in one of my virtual support groups, or if you’re based in California and are interested in therapy.

If you reside in another state and are seeking therapy, I highly recommend the AFAC therapist directory at foodallergycounseling.org

May is Food Allergy and Celiac Awareness Month. Let’s talk about the mental health side because anxiety, isolation, and trauma are part of this picture too.

Some quick facts:
- Nearly half of parents report PTSD symptoms after their child experiences anaphylaxis.
- 1 in 3 teens with food allergies has been bullied because of them.
- Anxiety doesn’t always match reaction history. Fear of the unknown can be just as heavy.
- Parents, teens, and young adults all experience chronic stress and hypervigilance.

Therapy helps when:
↳ You’re newly diagnosed and overwhelmed
↳ You’ve had a reaction
↳ You’re avoiding restaurants, parties, travel, or hanging with friends
↳ You’re heading to a new school, college, or a big life transition
↳ Allergy anxiety is showing up as panic, sleep issues, or family tension

How do I know this? I was born with anaphylactic food allergies and asthma. I know the fear, the vigilance, feeling different or like a burden. Now, I’m a therapist who specializes in helping teens, young adults, and parents navigate the emotional weight of food allergies.

You don’t have to just survive with allergies. You and your child can actually live fully. If this resonates, follow along or reach out (link in bio).

Come with me to Portugal as someone with an anaphylactic dairy allergy! 🇵🇹✨🤍

This was my first time traveling to Europe and I had the best time ever. I found Portugal to be even more allergy-friendly than the US. The servers were so knowledgable and friendly at all the restaurants we visited, most of the time allergens were listed on menus and they would have ingredient lists available, and everyone was very willing to accommodate me.

My biggest tips are to buy an card for your allergens, come prepared with your medical kit at all times, know the country’s emergency phone number and nearby hospitals, and research ahead of time.

During our trip, we visited Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Colares, and Cascais. For all my allergy reviews, make sure to follow me on (username: jennatso). Major shoutout to my two best friends who are so understanding and kind when it comes to my allergy 👯‍♀️

This trip was a major confidence builder for me and proved that I can travel with anaphylactic allergies! 🧚🏼‍♀️

I often hear friends and clients say, “I went to therapy and had nothing to talk about.”

Sometimes there’s even a quiet panic underneath that or feeling like you’re wasting time or that you should be “further along.”

Here’s what I want you to know: “Nothing to talk about” is never nothing. It’s actually an exciting invitation.

It’s a chance to notice the pressure to perform even in a room designed for your healing and to sit in the discomfort of silence and see what emerges when you stop trying to fill the space.

So if you find yourself with nothing next session, here are 5 places to start:

✨ An activity you loved before you worried what others thought
✨ A way you protected yourself this week (even subtly)
✨ A body sensation or a spot in the room your eyes keep going to
✨ The last time you felt truly seen and how you noticed that in your body
✨ The pressure to show up, perform, or ‘be a good client’

No need to have an agenda. Just curiosity. I’ll be right there with you.

Save this for your next session or send it to a friend who thinks they have nothing to talk about 🤣💗
