July is Disability Pride Month! An opportunity to celebrate disability as an identity, culture, and community, while recognizing the diversity of disabled experiences.
This artwork is inspired by the Disability Pride Flag, originally designed by disability advocate Ann Magill and later updated with community feedback to improve accessibility. Each color represents different experiences within the disability community:
❤️ Red – physical disabilities
💛 Gold – neurodivergence
🤍 White – non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities
💙 Blue – psychiatric disabilities and mental health disabilities
💚 Green – sensory disabilities
The diagonal band symbolizes breaking through barriers and moving forward in ways that challenge inaccessible systems.
In art therapy, color can become a language of its own. Colors may hold shared meanings, but they can also represent memories, emotions, identities, relationships, or experiences that are deeply personal. There isn’t one “right” way to create or interpret your art—your meaning matters.
From a neurodiversity-affirming and disability justice perspective, art therapy isn’t about changing who you are. It can offer space to explore identity, process experiences, express emotions, celebrate strengths, connect with community, and imagine more accessible futures.
Whether disability is an identity you celebrate, are exploring, or are learning about as an ally, we hope this month is an opportunity to listen to disabled voices, learn from the disability community, and advocate for a more accessible and inclusive world.
