Your horse will have the potential to develop muscle and strength in the hind end, balance at different speeds, and learn to carry themselves in a correct frame. In addition to these, walk-trot transitions in hand offer a time to bond with your horse, and potentially exercise yourself as well.

Belly lifts, otherwise known as back lifts, are an essential exercise that builds your horses core muscles. By rubbing or scratching your horses belly starting back to front, they will respond by rounding their back. This is especially beneficial for horses with kissing spine, and even horses with back soreness. In addition to this, belly lifts can even benefit strengthening the stifle. Backing your horse up hills is an excellent exercise that targets multiple muscle groups, such as their core and hindquarters. Because backing up in this way is less normal, it might be a mental challenge, and help grow your horses’ proprioception and balance. While doing this exercise, it is important for your horse to back up straight and to work at a reasonable pace in order to properly work muscles and joints.

One way to tell that your horse is off in their hind end is if their hind legs do not track into its front steps correctly. This stretch, which targets the hips, hocks, and stifle, helps improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility. The stronger your horse is in the hind end, the better prepared they will be for competition and the less risk of injury. Before trying this stretch, however, it is important to first consult your vet in order to avoid injury.
