☀️ 3 things I would NEVER do as a family physician in this crazy summer heat:

1️⃣ Leave the house without SPF. Protecting your skin is a daily essential, especially when you’re spending more time outdoors.

2️⃣ Only drink water. In extreme heat, you’re losing more than just water through sweat. Electrolytes can help replenish what your body is losing.

3️⃣ Ignore symptoms like a headache, nausea, or dizziness. These can be warning signs that your body is struggling with the heat. Get somewhere cool, hydrate, replenish your electrolytes, and don’t push through it.

Enjoy your summer, but listen to your body and stay safe!

🚨 Cyclospora is on the rise across the U.S.

Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause a gastrointestinal infection, with symptoms including persistent diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue and weight loss. Cases tend to increase during the warmer months, and recent outbreaks have been connected to contaminated produce.

This is a good reminder to wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly, pay attention to food safety alerts, and know the symptoms. If you experience persistent diarrhea or feel unusually unwell, talk to your healthcare provider about whether testing may be appropriate.

This one really upset me.

I worked in healthcare throughout COVID, and there are things I will never be able to forget. The hours. The fear. The exhaustion. The uncertainty. Being a single mom to two boys and constantly worrying about their health, while also wondering if I was making the right decision by continuing to walk into the hospital every day.

So hearing people now say that the ICUs were empty or that what we experienced was somehow fake is incredibly infuriating to me.

You can debate policies. You can question decisions. You can have different opinions about how COVID was handled. But please don’t erase the experiences of the healthcare workers and families who lived through it.

I was there. I saw it. I lived it. And I will never forget it.
