Diarrhea?

Cyclospora is a parasitic infection of the intestines that causes prolonged watery diarrhea, often accompanied by loss of appetite, abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes low-grade fever or weight loss. Symptoms typically begin about 1 week after consuming contaminated food or water, most commonly fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs, or berries. Unlike many causes of food poisoning, Cyclospora is not usually spread directly from person to person because the parasite requires time in the environment to become infectious. Diagnosis is made with specialized stool testing, and the treatment of choice is the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX, Bactrim).

Tick Bites

Ticks are back! Bitten by a tick? Not sure what to do? FirstCare Medical Center's providers have the answers you need. Call for a telemed visit or come in today. The faster you take medication the less likely you will be infected with Lyme disease.

1. Save the tick! Bring it to us for identification.

2. Be sure all the tick parts are out of your skin. If you aren't sure, come to us where we have skin magnification devices.

3. Get antibiotics if the tick is a "Deer Tick", officially called the Black Legged Tick or Ixodes. You should start these medications within 72 hours of the tick bite.

Doxycycline may be considered for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following certain tick bites, particularly in situations deemed high-risk to potentially reduce the chance of developing Lyme disease. High-risk criteria typically involve a bite from an Ixodes species tick that has been attached for a specific duration in an area known for a high incidence of Lyme disease.

While a single dose of doxycycline is sometimes used in these specific circumstances to potentially lower the risk of infection, it is important to note that this approach does not guarantee prevention and is not effective against all tick-borne illnesses.
