The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is a large, superficial muscle on each side of the neck. Its primary functions are to rotate and tilt the head, flex the neck, and assist with deep breathing by helping elevate the rib cage during forceful inhalation.
A tight SCM muscle may contribute to neck pain and stiffness, headaches, reduced neck mobility, jaw discomfort, and pain that can refer to the face, behind the ear, or around the eye. It can also contribute to forward head posture and altered breathing mechanics, making deep breaths feel more restricted and increasing tension throughout the neck and shoulders.
Massage can help reduce tension in the SCM by improving soft tissue mobility, decreasing muscle tightness, and supporting improved neck range of motion. Targeted work around the SCM and surrounding muscles may help relieve associated discomfort, improve posture awareness, and promote more efficient movement patterns.
