Stretching does not only mean improving the mobility of the muscles. What you see in this picture is actually a nerve stretch!

While it is a position that may not seem normal, being able to achieve the position with both arms at the same time is difficult for many people. This position stretches the ulnar nerve, which originates at the bottom of the neck and upper part of the mid back.

Symptoms of tightness of the ulnar nerve can stem from the mid back, to the shoulder, inside of the elbow, and all the way to the hand. Especially those who drive or work at a computer for long periods of time can develop symptoms along this entire nerve!

📲 If you try this stretch and it causes symptoms or pain in either arm, it might be time for you to schedule your initial assessment at Functional Physical Therapy!

↕️ New Video Drop Wednesday: Head To Toe Stability Within Redcord ↕️

Full body suspension is something that not many people will get to experience! But with the Redcord Suspension System, we are able to deliver just that!

By combining an unsteady surface at the head and at the feet, we are maximally challenging the stabilizers throughout the body. This can help to:

➖ Decrease painful movement patterns.

➖ Improve mobility throughout the spine, from the neck down to the tailbone.

➖ Improve endurance for standing, walking, or performing tasks around the house.

➖ Increase control and decrease likelihood of injury with higher level athletic activities.

💬 And many more!

📲 Not every patient at Functional Physical Therapy will be fully suspended, and that will be determined by our full body assessment performed at each treatment session! But each patient will feel the benefits of Redcord during their individualized treatments at Functional PT!

📹 New Video Drop Wednesday: Single Arm Stability With Perturbation In Redcord 📹

Instability training can be challenging enough, but performing it unilaterally only increases that challenge. This training will also help to incorporate multiple sets of muscles across the entire body. These will include:

➖ Core stabilizers to maintain an upright posture with all exercises and activities.

➖ Scapular stabilizers, improving strength and stability with overhead activities.

➖ Thoracic rotators. They work to keep the body straight during this exercise but also help to improve mobility when trying to rotate.

💬 And many more.

📲 To feel the difference of instability training and progressing to controlling your body weight unilaterally, contact Functional Physical Therapy!

⚾️ Sports Injury Of The Week: First Rib Fracture ⚾️

This past week, after several days of testing, New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge was diagnosed with a stress fracture of his first rib. He had been having symptoms in his middle back and shoulder for over a month. Although it is not an area that is injured often, we have been hearing the term thoracic outlet syndrome much more over the past few years.

🗓️ They announced that Judge would be out the next four to six weeks before they do a repeat scan on the rib. If the fracture has healed by then, it will still be multiple weeks for Judge to ramp up activity and go on a rehabilitation assignment. We would not expect to see Aaron Judge in the Yankees uniform for at least the next two months.

➖ They had feared thoracic outlet syndrome since Judge had inconsistent pains the past month. With thoracic outlet syndrome, the space between the collarbone and first rib is reduced and the nerves to the arm are compressed. Often, surgery is performed to alleviate this pressure, and the athlete’s season is certainly over.

📲 Whether you have been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome or a fractured first rib, Functional Physical Therapy is here for you! We will assess your entire upper quadrant and have you moving more freely as quickly as possible!

❌ We rarely give home home exercises at Functional Physical Therapy that require equipment. Controlling and moving your body weight is almost always enough to improve mobility, increase neuromuscular control, and reduce pain with everyday activities!

Performing this tricep press at the counter top instead of a dumbbell will work to increase multiple muscle groups. This variation works to increase:

➖ Activation and mobility of the scapula, increasing shoulder mobility.

➖ Core muscle activation, allowing you to maintain better posture with walking, sitting, and performing all everyday activities.

➖ Strength of the quadriceps and hamstrings, just like you do while squatting and lunging.

💬 And many more!

📲 Give this variation a try at home, and if you still need additional progressions to improve your everyday mobility, contact Functional Physical Therapy!

⬅️ New Video Drop Wednesday: Improving Ability To Control Lateral Motion In Redcord ➡️

This exercise is called shoulder adduction in Redcord, and it can improve the mobility of your shoulder blade into all planes of motion. And through fascial connections, it can work even more parts of your body than just your shoulder blades!

Moving your body outside of your base of support (or where your feet are planted) is a key part of functioning everyday. This lateral movement is something that is not often trained at the gym. It is also a movement that many give up as they age. But let’s keep moving laterally because it will help to:

➖ Improve the strength and stability of your gluteus medius to support your hips and core.

➖ Maintain the ability for your mind to connect with the muscles keeping you upright if you loose your balance.

➖ Decrease tension and potential injury when cutting and changing direction while playing a sport or chasing after your children.

💬 And much more!

📲 If you have given up on moving laterally and are starting to feel the effects during your everyday activities, contact Functional Physical Therapy to get yourself back on track!
