Dexter Maurice Smith, of Durham, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned from this life on July 14, 2026 with his wife by his side, following a short illness.

Before he departed this realm, with his sisters present he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. 2 Corinthians 5:8 “ We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Born on October 28, 1961, at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, he was the first son of the late Charles F. Smith Sr. and Joann Bunch Smith. Dexter was a fighter from birth, demonstrating his signature resilience in the newborn nursery by overcoming a viral infection.
Raised in Jamaica, New York, he built a strong Christian foundation at an early age at Greater Zion Baptist Church in the Bronx, where he sang in the choir with his four siblings. An avid sportsman and Boy Scout in his youth, Dexter loved football but excelled in basketball.
He proudly played for the Braves at Hillcrest High School and Rockland County Community College alongside his lifelong best friend and best man, Curtis Ingram.
Following college, Dexter relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Tammy Betts. They shared 32 beautiful years of marriage, building an unwavering love and strong bond that was evident to everyone who knew them. To this union, they were blessed with two wonderful children, Jordyn and Jonathyn. Dexter loved his family immensely, spending countless hours teaching, coaching, and encouraging his children in the sport he loved so much.

Dexter worked for the Town of Chapel Hill for 21 years, earning deep respect from his peers. Known for his easygoing nature, a co-worker fondly shared that riding with Dexter was always a joy because you could play your own music completely free of judgment. Dexter also shared his passion for basketball; he began coaching both his children Jordyn & Jonathyn when they were 4 years old. His love for basketball continued as he coached girls' and Boys’ basketball for Durham Parks and Recreation as well as the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) league for several years.

"Dex," as he was affectionately called, was a beacon of strength and love who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Left to cherish his beautiful memory is his loving wife, Tammy Smith; his two children, Jordyn Sessoms (Elijah) and Jonathyn Smith; his two grandchildren, Nasir and Islah; his mother, Joann Smith; his three sisters, Adriane Hall (Warren), Chimaine Smith, and Joan Smith; his brother Charles F. Smith Jr (Nateisha) and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and dear friends.

The funeral will be 1:00pm Friday at Mt Zion AME Church. Visitation will be 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the church. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Public viewing will be Thursday 10:00am to 5:00pm at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

With hearts filled with love and gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Eugene Breeze. Born on March 13, 1939, to James Breeze and Magdaline Breeze Torain and lovingly reared by Ernest Torain in Orange County, NC, Eugene was raised on a foundation of faith, integrity, respect, and hard work that guided him throughout his life. He peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on July 15, 2026.

A proud veteran, devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and faithful servant of God, Eugene lived a life marked by quiet strength, steadfast dedication, and unwavering love for his family. He enjoyed a long career with the Orange County Transportation Department, where his commitment, dependability, and strong work ethic earned the respect and admiration of coworkers and community members alike.

Eugene was a devoted member of Glenns Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Trustee and in numerous other capacities until his health no longer allowed. His faith was not merely something he professed, but something he lived each day through his service, compassion, and dedication to others. Eugene's life stands as a testament to perseverance, faith, and selfless service.

His legacy lives on through the generations he nurtured, the lives he touched, and the values he instilled. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we rejoice in the knowledge that his work here is complete, his crown has been earned, and his spirit now rests in the peace and presence of the Lord.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved first wife, Mattie Louise Beasley Breeze; and his daughter, Mattie Sue Bolton Bradsher.

Cherishing his life and carrying on his legacy are his devoted wife of 42 years, Barbara Breeze; his children, Regina Breeze, Jacqueline Breeze, and Kevin (Nikki) Beasley. Eight grandchildren: David (Tanya) Bolton, Jessica (Patrick) Thompson, Jerry (Charmain) Enoch, Tyrek Beasley, Brandon Jones, Nicholas (Kyana) Blackwell, Nickolas (Daria) Beasley, and Matthew Beasley. Fourteen great-grandchildren: Malachi Bolton; Tyson and Jaxon Thompson; Anaya Enoch; Anyssa (Trell) Queen; Kristopher Watkins; Dashawn and Darnell Bynum; Jamar Blackwell; Kaden Beasley; and Brandon Jr., Bria, Brandan, and Braylee Jones. Three great-great-grandchildren, Ayden Hester, Ariya Queen, and Noah Watkins and a host of family and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

The funeral will be Tuesday 2:00pm at Union Grove Baptist Church.
Visitation will be 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the church.
Burial will be at Glenn Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Public viewing Monday 10:00am to 5:00pm at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

He died June 6, 2026 in Parkview Healthcare in Chapel, NC

After high school Billy entered the military, where he served honorably for 20 years . He attended Institute for Paralegal Training and graduated with Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Maryland.

Preceded in death by his mother and father Henry Carr Villines and Easter Hester Villines , brothers; Henry Carr Villines Jr. , Thomas Edward Villines, Russell Villines, Algeon Hughes, sisters; Lilly Catherine Villines Smith and Gracie O’Briant,

Survivors are Elbert Villines (Christine) and sister Evelyn Huges Vinson. two aunts; Ruby Hester Wilson and Rosie Villines Miller.

The funeral will be Saturday 1:30 July 11, 2026 at Union Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
