Meet one of our amazing Young Puppy Trainers, Jenny 💙🐾

Jenny first heard about EENP through the Duke Canine Cognition Center. Inspired by stories of what service dogs can do and the lives they help change, she decided to get involved with EENP.

Jenny began volunteering as a litter care volunteer and helped care for puppies during their earliest weeks. Last November she stepped into a new role as Aspen’s Young Puppy Trainer (YPT), caring for and training him through May.

For Jenny, one of the most meaningful parts of volunteering has been the community. “You come for the dogs and you stay for the amazing community you gain through EENP.” She especially enjoyed weekly YPT classes, building her training skills and having the support of her fellow Young Puppy Trainers along the way.

Jenny says people may not realize how much time, attention and care go into raising a future service dog. It takes patience, consistency and keeping a close eye on what the puppy is doing. Things can get chaotic at times, but Jenny says she loves it.

One of her favorite memories with Aspen happened at a Duke tennis tournament where Duke player Aspen Schuman was competing. Each time the crowd cheered Aspen Schuman’s name, Aspen the pup looked around in complete confusion and wondered why everyone was suddenly yelling and cheering for him. Jenny thinks he may have been a good luck charm because Aspen Schuman went on to win her match in three sets.

A few weeks ago, Jenny welcomed another EENP service dog in training, Cami, into her home. Once again, Jenny will help an EENP service dog in training build the skills, confidence, and strong foundation they need to succeed in their next phase of training.

Dedicated Young Puppy Trainers like Jenny make our mission possible. Their dedication and care help our puppies grow into service dogs that will one day change someone’s life ❤️ We are so grateful for every one of our YPTs and can’t wait to share more memories that Jenny and Cami make on their journey together.

Introducing new EENP facility placement team ✋ NC Basnight Cancer Hospital & Sookie! 🐾

Linnea Van Pelt is the Program Manager at the Patient and Family Resource Center at the N.C. Basnight Cancer Hospital. The space is designed for patients and their families to rest between appointments, access additional health services, and receive extra support and care during treatment.

The Resource Center now has a new member of the care team - Sookie! Whether she's snuggling beside them or bringing them a toy to invite them to play, she'll bring comfort, companionship, and a little extra joy to patients and their families during some of life's most difficult moments. Beyond helping patients, she will also be a source of encouragement and comfort for staff at UNC Hospital and help create a warmer and supportive atmosphere throughout the hospital.

Sookie's home base will be at the Resource Center with Linnea, her primary handler. Deanna Harris, Clinical Director of Oncology Operations, and Stephanie Risgaard, Patient Services Manager of Pediatric Oncology Clinic and Infusion Center, are also attended training and will graduate as Sookie's secondary handlers so that she can spread support throughout the hospital.

Sookie’s training was made possible by an amazing team of volunteers, ABEL trainers, and staff, starting from her birth in the home of Heidi & Aaron Cook and support from a fantastic litter care team. Her young puppy trainer was Adrienne Cook. Sookie received advanced training from the ABEL trainers at Caswell CC, Orange CC, and Warren CI, and her furlough trainers were Hanna Baum, Aaron Cook, Heidi Cook, and Cindy Leacox.

🎉❤️ Welcome to the EENP family, NC Basnight Cancer Center, Linnea, Deanna, Stephanie, & Sookie! ❤️🎉

Introducing new EENP team ✋ Tracy Pouzar & her new Mobility Assistance Dog, Clove!🦮🐾❤️

Tracy Pouzar has always found purpose in showing up for others, whether she is volunteering in her community, spending time with family, or unwinding with video games and friends after a long day. Her daughter and son in law live just three houses down, which means spending time with the people she loves most are part of her daily life. Tracy also shows up for her wider community as a dedicated volunteer, and she is always looking for new ways to remain engaged, helpful, and connected to her community.

For years, Tracy has managed chronic pain and mobility challenges related to her peripheral neuropathy, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and disc disease in her neck and lower back. Numbness in her feet, makes balance difficult on uneven ground and curbs. Everyday movements like bending to pick something up or opening a drawer can trigger intense pain in her neck and back. By the end of the day, fatigue often catches up with her, and Tracy has to carefully pace her energy so she can keep showing up for the people and activities that matter to her.

Clove, Tracy’s new mobility assistance service dog, is stepping into her life as a steady source of support, helping conserve her energy, make daily routines steadier and less physically demanding, and give her more room in the day for the people and activities she loves. He can provide counterbalance while walking, retrieve dropped items and medications, assist on stairs, and remind Tracy to rest before her body becomes too fatigued.

With Clove by her side, Tracy can look forward to longer walks with family, more energy for volunteering in the community, steadier footing on uneven ground, and support in the small moments that can take the biggest toll. Whether she is gardening, giving back to her community, traveling, or relaxing with family and friends, Clove will be there as a steady partner through it all.

Clove’s training was made possible by an amazing team of volunteers, ABEL trainers, and staff, starting from his birth in the home of Carolyn Ikenberry with help from Kelsey Brereton, then reared in the home of Mandy Hitchcock and Ed Chaney and support from a fantastic litter care team. His young puppy trainer was Sarah Cloues. Clove received advanced training from the ABEL trainers at Caswell CC and Warren CI, and his furlough trainers were Hanna Baum, Deb Cunningham, Adelaide Gordon, Claudette Nitard, and Tawny Stecker.

🎉❤️ Welcome to the EENP family, Tracy & Clove! ❤️🎉

Introducing new EENP team ✋ Jim Cunningham & his new Mobility Assistance Dog, Saffron!🦮🐾❤️

Jim Cunningham is someone who truly values connection. He loves spending time with family, watching movies, trying new restaurants, and welcoming friends and neighbors who regularly gather at his and Stacey's home. Jim finds joy in the relationships and experiences that make life meaningful, and he and his wife, Stacey, have built a close knit life surrounded by family, longtime friends, and two beloved dogs.

Diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2025, Jim has experienced rapid progression of the disease. ALS is a neurological disease, which causes increasing muscle weakness, fatigue, balance difficulties, and loss of mobility. In recent months, he has transitioned to using a power wheelchair full time to conserve energy and reduce the risk of falls. Tasks that once felt automatic, like standing, moving through the house, getting dressed, or transferring safely, now require careful planning and support.

Through it all, Jim continues to focus on maintaining as much independence as possible. He still enjoys neighborhood outings, family activities, and spending time with the many people who care deeply about him. Stacey has reduced her workload to help support him, and surrounded by a strong and supportive community, they are adapting to the realities of ALS one day at a time.

Now, Jim has a new partner in his support network. Saffron, his Mobility Assistance Dog, is trained to help with daily tasks that will help keep him safer and more independent. Saffron can retrieve dropped items, open doors, activate accessibility buttons in public. For Jim, Saffrons arrival means more independence at home, more confidence out in the community, and more peace of mind knowing that if Jim needs Stacey's support, he can ask Saffron to go get Stacey. Most importantly, Saffron will be by Jim's side ready to help as his needs change.

Saffron’s training was made possible by an amazing team of volunteers, ABEL trainers, and staff, starting from her birth in the home of Carolyn Ikenberry with help from Kelsey Brereton, then reared in the home of Mandy Hitchcock and Ed Chaney and support from a fantastic litter care team. Her young puppy trainer was Margaret Este. Saffron received advanced training from the ABEL trainers at Warren CI, Orange CC, and her furlough trainers were Hanna Baum, Agathe Ceppe, Deborah Gibbs, and Ellin Porterfield.

🎉❤️Welcome to the EENP family, Jim, Stacey & Saffron!❤️🎉

Introducing new EENP team ✋ Terry Johnson & her new Mobility Assistance Dog, Rosemary!🦮🐾❤️

Terry Johnson believes in staying active, involved in her community, and making the most of every day. She enjoys yardwork, participating in church and community activities, and traveling to baseball games with her husband Clarence, even though they root for different teams. Whether she’s relaxing on the back deck, working in the yard or continuing her part time nursing work, Terry is happiest when she is moving and connecting with her community.

Over the years, mobility challenges related to cervical stenosis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, and multiple orthopedic injuries have made daily life increasingly difficult. Terry experiences chronic balance issues, weakness, pain, and fatigue that worsen significantly throughout the day. Falls are common, often happening when her foot catches and she can’t regain her balance, and getting back up typically requires help from another person or sturdy furniture nearby. She uses a cane regularly and sometimes relies on a walker, especially after long or active days.

Terry also experiences chronic pain, leg cramping, and reduced mobility in both her left arm and leg due to previous fractures. Even with these challenges, she continues working part-time and traveling when she can. Navigating airports, stairs, uneven terrain, or long distances require significantly more energy and time than they once did, but Terry remains determined to be active and doing the things she loves.

Now, Terry has a new helper -- her Mobility Assistance Dog Rosemary. Rosemary is trained to support her balance and safety both at home and in the community. Rosemary will provide stability while walking over uneven surfaces, retrieve dropped items, help Terry navigate stairs, carry belongings, and open doors. She will support Terry in moments when balance becomes uncertain, reducing the risk of a fall. If a fall does occur, Rosemary can help Terry recover and find additional help if she needs it. Because of Rosemary, Terry can be more active and present in her community, participate in more activities with her church, and travel to more baseball games with Clarence, where they will both have one team they can agree on: Team Rosemary. 🦮

Rosemary’s training was made possible by an amazing team of volunteers, ABEL trainers, and staff, starting from her birth in the home of Carolyn Ikenberry with help from Kelsey Brereton, then reared in the home of Mandy Hitchcock and Ed Chaney and support from a fantastic litter care team. Her young puppy trainer was Carolyn McShane. Rosemary received advanced training from the ABEL trainers at Caswell CC, Orange CC, and Warren CI, and her furlough trainers were Hanna Baum, Agathe Ceppe, Deborah Gibbs, and Ellin Porterfield.

🎉❤️ Welcome to the EENP family, Terry & Rosemary! ❤️🎉
