The astronomical event that happens during this time is the Autumn Equinox, and just like the Spring Equinox back in March, this is another pivotal turning point that represents balance and change. While many cultures and people around the world have honored this seasonal shift for thousands of years, it wasn’t until more modern times that it was adopted as 1 of the 8 neo-pagan Sabbats.
Mabon (MAY’bn) is a holiday observed by Pagans and Wiccans during the first day of Autumn, the second of three harvest centered celebrations. Although the origins of this day may differ according to some scholars, regardless of where and how this holiday came to be, it has been heavily influenced by many different religions and folklore.
Themes for this time of the year include gathering, giving, and gratitude.Every resource, either grown, given, or foraged, was a reason to give thanks and show appreciation towards the Earth and those who provided. Feasts, fires, and nature based rituals were, and still are, common ways to partake in this period of transition.
