✨ Therapy is more meaningful when we start with what children LOVE. ✨

This cabinet full of letter magnets is a perfect example of how we can incorporate a child’s interests into therapy while still targeting important skills!

When a child is motivated and engaged, we can work on so much more than just “letters”

🔤 Literacy skills: identifying letters, matching sounds to symbols, building words, spelling, and developing early reading skills
✏️ Fine motor skills: grasping, placing, manipulating letters, and strengthening the skills needed for handwriting
🗣️ Speech & language skills: requesting, describing, answering questions, following directions, and expanding communication
🧠 Cognitive skills: sorting, categorizing, problem solving, and making connections

A child’s special interests aren’t distractions from therapy. They’re a bridge to learning. 💛

When we build therapy around what matters to a child, we create opportunities for connection, confidence, and growth. ✨

Not every child develops at the same pace, but these signs may indicate it's time for an evaluation.

🗣️ 1. Your child isn't meeting communication milestones.

Not saying many words by 18 months.
Not combining two words by age 2.
Difficult to understand compared to peers.

💬 2. You often have trouble understanding what your child says.
If family members frequently need your child to repeat themselves, or strangers have a hard time understanding them after age 3–4, a speech evaluation may be helpful.

👂 3. Your child has difficulty understanding language.
They may struggle to follow directions, answer simple questions, or understand everyday conversations.

🤝 4. Your child has trouble interacting with others.
They may have difficulty taking turns in conversation, expressing their wants and needs, or engaging with peers through communication.

📚 5. Your child becomes frustrated when trying to communicate.
Frequent tantrums, pointing instead of talking, giving up when trying to speak, or becoming upset because they can't express themselves can all be signs that additional support may help.

“What’s your favorite color?” is a common question, but colors aren’t always where we start in speech therapy.

Core words like more, help, go, and stop are used constantly throughout the day. By focusing on these powerful words first, we help children communicate wants, needs, ideas, and feelings across many different situations.

Colors, animals, and favorite toys (called fringe words) are still important! We just prioritize words that give children the greatest communication power.

A simple change in how we ask questions can make a big difference in a child's communication skills!

Why does offering choices work?

🌟 Makes it easier to respond = more opportunities for communication
🌟 Builds vocabulary by hearing and using specific words
🌟 Strengthens decision-making skills
🌟 Increases independence and confidence
🌟 Supports language growth during everyday routines

Open-ended questions can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for children who are still developing language. Offering two choices gives them a clear path to communicate while still encouraging them to make a meaningful choice.

Try it during meals, playtime, getting dressed, or choosing activities!

💬 Examples:
• "Do you want the red cup or the blue cup?"
• "Should we read a book or play with blocks?"
• "Do you want an apple or crackers?"

Small changes in how we talk can create big opportunities for language learning. ❤️
