Hospice of Hilo is non-profit organization dedicated to providing compassionate, quality care to serious and terminally-ill patients through support, counseling and education to our East Hawai‘i Community. We envision a community where everyone is touched by compassionate care, finding comfort and peace in a time of need. Hospice of Hilo brings together the support services of physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual and grief counselors and trained volunteers to provide care focused on the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Hospice of Hilo provides care for patients in East Hawai‘i spanning Laupāhoehoe to South Point, Ka‘ū. We are a private, non-profit agency, governed by a 15-member board of directors from the East Hawai‘i community. Hospice of Hilo is a member agency of the Hawaii Island United way and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

Remembering the good feels wrong

Never been so hard to choose which ramen I could stomach

Never cried harder than the first time I smelled a Keaukaha General Store musubi after we lost them

We are so blessed to live in Hawaiʻi and we know that weather is part of it. Those who are in palliative care and hospice understand the unique challenges of being on an island and in this space. So we are prepared!

grief is not a debt you pay in bad days.

nobody tells you that. everyone prepares you for the crying, the first holiday, the sound of their name in someone else’s mouth. nobody tells you about the tuesday you catch yourself laughing at something ordinary and then freeze, like you’ve been caught doing something wrong.

so you pull it back. you find the sadness again on purpose, because the good moment felt like forgetting, and forgetting feels like losing them twice.

but some mornings it walks beside you instead of on top of you. let it. that’s not healing skipping ahead, that’s just what carrying something for a long time eventually feels like. the weight doesn’t leave. your arms change.

you are allowed to eat a good meal. to sleep through the night. to make a plan for next month. none of it means you loved them less. the love is not measured in how much you suffer.

and on the days it does sit on your chest again, that’s not backsliding either. grief moves the way the ocean moves. it comes in, it goes out, it comes back. you’re not doing it wrong.

you also don’t have to do it alone.

Through a hurricane and everyday we will always keep on movin’🕺💃

As we prep here on Hawaiʻi Island for another weekend of storms after the devastating Hurricane Lala swept through our community, we are reminded to find joy🥹 even just a little

We will keep moving and showing up for our patients and community, and it is so important to find at least a little bit of happiness in the chaos.
