Sleep apnea is a more common condition than many might think.

In fact, at least one in five adults may have this condition and not even realize it, according to results from a 2015 study published in the Journal of Thoracic Disease. Seeing an ear, nose and throat expert can help with treatment and ruling out other possible conditions.

If spring has you dealing with congestion and facial pressure, sinusitis may be the reason. Sinusitis, otherwise known as a sinus infection, is caused by swelling and inflammation in the nasal passageways. It can lead to cold-like symptoms including nasal congestion, mucus discharge, facial pain and pressure, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and bad breath.

If symptoms linger or keep returning, an ENT specialist can help identify the cause and treatment options.

Stuffy nose and fatigue this season? It can be hard to tell what’s going on. Allergies and colds can both cause sneezing, a stuffy nose, headache, or fatigue. But allergies often cause itching in the nose, throat, and eyes, while colds do not. Colds can involve a sore throat and body aches, which are absent from allergies.

If you’re unsure and symptoms keep returning, an ENT visit can help you sort out the right next step.

Ear infections can lead to hearing loss over time, according to the World Report on Hearing.

Chronic ear infections are often associated with mild to moderate conductive hearing loss because of disruption in transmission of sound vibrations through the middle ear. This is due to the accumulated fluid, ruptured ear drum or erosion of middle ear ossicles.

Love your pet but not a fan of sneezing? You’re not alone: many people who own pets are allergic to cats or dogs, even if they may not realize it.

If symptoms of pet allergies flare up, focus on reducing allergen buildup: clean frequently (including couch covers, curtains, rugs and pet beds) and use HEPA air cleaners, when possible, to remove airborne particles. Our ENT experts are here to help recommend additional treatment options during your next visit!

Cooler air, even in the spring, can leave your throat feeling rough.

To help soothe irritation over time, one good starting point is to reduce alcohol consumption and smoking, since both can dry out the mucous membranes and worsen that parched feeling.

Think rain reduces pollen? Heavy downpours can actually worsen allergy symptoms by breaking up pollen into smaller, airborne particles.

Remember to play it safe if your allergy symptoms seem to worsen during heavy rain—stay indoors during storms!

Stuffy nose, sneezing and fatigue can happen with both allergies and colds, so how can you tell the difference?

Allergies often cause itching in the nose, throat and eyes, while colds don’t. Colds are more likely to involve a sore throat and body aches. Another big clue: allergies don’t cause a fever.

If symptoms linger for weeks (especially during known triggers), allergies are more likely. If you’re unsure, our ENT team can help you pinpoint what’s going on and recommend a treatment plan!
