A child is struggling to learn to read. Is it a reading delay, or could it be dyslexia?

On the surface, the difficulties can look very similar. A child may struggle to recognise words, read fluently or keep up with their peers.

But understanding why a child is finding reading difficult is important.

A reading delay describes what we are seeing, rather than identifying a specific underlying cause. There can be many reasons why reading develops more slowly than expected.

Dyslexia, however, is a specific learning difference that affects the development of accurate and fluent reading and spelling skills.

And importantly, a child can have both a reading delay and dyslexia. They are not mutually exclusive.

Some children make significant progress with targeted teaching, while others experience persistent difficulties that require more specialised support.

The key is not to assume that a child will simply catch up, or that every reading difficulty must be dyslexia.

Early identification, appropriate assessment and effective support can make an enormous difference to a child’s learning and confidence.
