Getting Ready for Kindergarten — From My Kindergartener to Yours

Kindergarten is such an exciting milestone for children and families. As a pediatrician — and a mom of a daughter who is just finishing her kindergarten year — I’ve been reminded how much growth and confidence children gain during this important transition.

One of the best ways to prepare for kindergarten is with a well-child visit before the school year begins. These visits help ensure your child is healthy, growing well, and developmentally ready for school.

During a kindergarten check-up we can:

✔ Review growth and development
✔ Check vision and hearing
✔ Make sure vaccines are up to date
✔ Talk about sleep, nutrition, and healthy routines
✔ Discuss social, emotional, and learning readiness for school

Kindergarten readiness is about more than knowing letters and numbers. In our community, Chattanooga 2.0’s “K-Ready” initiative highlights key areas that help children succeed — including learning skills, social and emotional development, language and early reading, early math, and independence.

Simple routines at home — like reading together each day — are one of the most powerful ways to build language, confidence, and a love of learning. Practicing independence (like using the bathroom, opening lunch containers, and following simple directions) and getting back into consistent sleep and morning routines can also make a big difference as children start school.

Chattanooga 2.0 offers helpful resources for families to support early learning and kindergarten readiness:

📅 If your child is starting kindergarten this fall, now is a great time to schedule their well-child visit. We’d love to help your child start the school year healthy, confident, and ready to learn!

New, large international review of 60 studies including 1,000,000 children released in Lancet does not indicate a clinically important increase in the likelihood of autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children of pregnant individuals who use paracetamol (acetaminophen / brand name Tylenol) as directed, supporting existing recommendations on its safety.

Current evidence does not indicate a clinically important increase in the likelihood of autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or intellectual disability in children of pregnant individuals who use paracetamol as directed, supporting existing recommendations on its safety.
