Having prescription coverage does not always mean your prescriptions are affordable.

We recently had a patient who was paying over $1,000 a month for his medications because his prescription plan was tied to a deductible. Every year, he would spend thousands of dollars out of pocket, finally hit his deductible around November, and maybe get one month where insurance actually helped much.

That is incredibly frustrating.

We were able to get those same medications for him here at Hitchcock Family Pharmacy for about $500 a month.

That is still real money. We know that. But cutting the cost in half matters, especially when someone has been told for years that the insurance price is just “what it costs.”

This is why we always encourage people to check with us, even if you have insurance. Sometimes insurance helps. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes the cash price is dramatically better.

On Memorial Day, I always think about Dr. James “Mazz” Mazzuchelli.

Mazz was one of my interns when I was on active duty. I can still picture him sitting across from me in my office, presenting patients for admission. After his internship he went on to become a Navy flight surgeon, and he was killed in a helicopter accident.

He is the closest person I personally lost to military service.

There were others, too. Men I knew from CrossFit at Camp Pendleton. At the height of the Iraq War, our CrossFit box lost several. I also remember the young mothers I cared for as a physician, including mothers being induced early so they could travel to their husband’s funeral. I remember one holding his picture. I had to do that four times during my active duty career, and I still remember them.

Memorial Day is not abstract for those who served, and it is certainly not abstract for the families who received that knock on the door.

Today I remember Mazz. I remember those Marines and sailors. I remember the wives, husbands, children, parents, and friends whose lives were forever changed.

Asked so little.
Gave so much.

May we remember them well.
