This Sunday is Grandparents Day. It's also the first day of National Assisted Living Week — and that isn't a coincidence.
NCAL created the week in 1995 and deliberately set it to open on Grandparents Day every year. The week starts on the one Sunday when families are already walking through the door.
This year's theme is "Shining Through the Years." Notice the word: shining, not shone. Not a look back at a life that's mostly behind someone. The light is still on.
The theme honors residents — and it honors the people who help that light stay on. That second part deserves more attention than it usually gets.
It's the caregiver who learns without being told that your mother has taken her coffee the same way since 1961. Who knows which resident gets restless around four and quietly finds her something to do at ten till. Who asks about the same photograph for the third time because she knows which one produces the good story.
It's whoever is awake in that house at three in the morning. The only reason a family finally sleeps through the night is that somebody else is sitting up. Nobody ever sees that job done well.
Come see a home this week. Bring the grandkids on Sunday.
