Hydration! Sometimes our body needs more than just water. This was a nettle and raspberry leaf infusion, with a heavy pour of honey, that I enjoyed frequently during my third, and fourth postpartum trimesters. These days I keep forgetting to give myself the deep nourishment from these herbal infusions. But it's time to get back to this beautiful care!

An herbal infusion is simply a longer brew time. When I'm needing a really big bump of nutrients I take a quart cup of both nettle and raspberry leaf, pour in the hot water, cover and let it steep overnight. I drink it the next day either hot or cold.

Raspberry leaf is a uterine toner, and helps all hollow organs, such as your reproductive organs and intestines. Nettle is a super food of the herbal world, and is filled with vitamins and minerals.

Herbal Sitz Bath Recipe, this is especially beneficial if you are healing any tears, or stiches.

Mix 3 parts calendula, and lavender, 2 part comfrey, rose, and yarrow.

Brew your sitz bath herbal teabag (I use 1 - 1 ½ cups) in 4-8 cups of boiled water.

Let steep for 20 mins or until comfortable temperature. (Do not use until it is at a comfortable temperature, you don’t want to burn yourself!)

Pour into sitz bath tub, or a wide shallow bowl. You may need to add more water to your tub/bowl if necessary.

Sit and soak your perineum for 15-20 minutes, at least once a day!

Lavender:

Can be used topically to reduce inflammation, and promote healing. It can also be used to help promote sleep, can also be used to help promote sleep, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Calendula:

This is another gentle and powerful herb. Topically it can have antimicrobial, anti-inflammitory, and wound healing benefits.

Rose:

Another gentle healer, rose is an astringent, and helps with inflammation. It softens and comforts tender tissues.

Comfrey:

“Heals tears and injuries caused during birthing. It also strengthens muscles and tissues, and provides nutrients to rebuild the body,” - Rosemary Gladstar

Yarrow:

This herb has been used throughout time to slow and stop bleeding topically.

Sometimes self doula-care is actually carving out time for yourself. Taking a moment to have a snack, drink some water, have a bath and journal. Those moments of pampering rarely happen without us first making the time for it. Sometimes our partner might see our stress level rise and make that time for us. But let's be honest forced relaxation isn't always relaxing. You're still scrolling, making lists, going through fb marketplace for new summer clothes since your children are growing like weeds. Rarely do we take the time to look up from our stress and let ourselves relax. And it's showing!

Somethings immediately make me stop the constant stream of thoughts. Using a special body oil. (Like this one from . Not an ad just my favorite) My favorite blend of herbs for the tub. And a brain dump journaling session. It doesn't have to take long. Sometimes I just need 5 minutes. But sometimes I need 20, or an hour to actually feel the effects of it. And both are okay!!

Instead of thinking 'have I accomplished enough for a rest?' flip the script and start asking 'have I rested enough to accomplish something?' and watch the magic happen.

When you think of a doula coming to take care of you, what do you think of?! And what do you think of when you hear self care?

I think of basic needs being met, feeling validated, and cared for. Being able to rest fully because you know that you are being taken care of.

When I think of self care it's usually something that is easy to skip, or overlook on a day to day basis. But what if we flip the script on self care, and call it self doula-care instead? The basic needs that need to be met, but doing it in a mindful and restful way.

When you take care of yourself, think of it as you're taking care of your best friend. Treat yourself gently.

Keep your eyes open for an upcoming series on how to start caring for yourself in a doula-centered way.

Today's doula day was another wonderful one! I truly never get tired of taking care of new parents who are in the in-between time. Healing, surviving, juggling siblings, and figuring out the new balance of everything. And then I get to step in and try to make a day a little bit easier for them.

Today was filled with a bit of chatting with the Mama, getting the saved up stress off her chest. And just being able to give her some validation so she could take a deep breath again. Then I got her some food and refilled her water. I took the baby for a little bit so she could rest. I prepped some veggies with a big sister, who was a wonderful helper! I even got to help her wear her baby doll the same way I was wearing her baby sister. It was precious!

I got some roasted veg and chicken in the oven, then made a pan sauce when that was done. I did all the dishes and put everything away so the kitchen was fully reset. And I did a little laundry.

Imagine being that new parent, and just for one night in your week of newness and sleepless nights when you don't have to think about what's for dinner and don't have to deal with any dishes. Sometimes that alone is enough to have a doula. But when you add in the emotional factor, talking to someone who has been where you are and is there for you completely, it really is a valuable asset to your postpartum days.

Have you ever wondered what a postpartum doula visit is like?

When I arrive we sit and touch base with how things are going, what is bringing you joy or stressing you out. And then we talk about what you need from me during that visit. Sometimes that can be wearing the baby and cleaning the kitchen and tidying up while you nap or shower. Other times I will get the fridge stocked with some easy grab and go meals, or we just chat while you process your birth and enjoy a quiet peaceful moment.

So much of the focus is on the new baby in that first year, and my sole purpose is focusing on the mother. These postpartum days will affect a new mama for the rest of her life, and she deserves to be pampered and loved on!

I have full availability right now so send me a note, or go to my website for more information! You can sign up for my email list to get a free Hygge Postpartum Self Care Guide at hellolovelydoula.com
