With hearts full of sorrow and gratitude, we share the unexpected passing of Reverend Nicholas J. Cunningham—affectionately known to many as “Nick”—who departed this life on July 25, 2026, in the rectory. Born December 13, 1953, in Toledo, Nicholas embraced a calling that shaped every aspect of his remarkable journey, filling his years with compassion, dedication, and unwavering faith.

For those wishing to pay their respects, the welcoming of his body will be held on July 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. until vespers at 7:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Bavaria, Ohio. The sacredness of his life will be honored with a Mass, celebrated on July 31, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. If you would like to make a donation in Nick's honor, in lieu of flowers, Nick requested that it go to the Priest Retirement Fund. The arrangements are under the direction of the Zachrich Family Funeral Home of Holgate.

Throughout his years, Reverend Nicholas’s unwavering faith, commitment to community, and boundless generosity created a lasting impact in the lives of countless individuals. He leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness, compassion, and hope—gifts which will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him. May his gentle soul find eternal peace and may we all strive to continue his work by caring for others with the same open heart that defined his remarkable life.

A Catholic Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria, with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. Visitation will take place from 2:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Zachrich Funeral Home, Holgate.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Putnam County Hospice or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank the Putnam County Hospice and Vancrest of Holgate for their loving care.
