Doula's serve the communities we live in. We exist to serve our neighbors, our coworkers, the sweet mom who sits behind us in church, and the frightened teenager who lives down the road from us. Its been a while so I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself:

My name is Alexa Watkin, owner of Lakewood Births, and I am a Birth Doula serving the West Michigan area.

I believe that birth is sacred and powerful, and at the same time, it is a moment of vulnerability. Birth must be kept sacred, and thats where your doula comes in. A birth partner is not a replacement to your partner or loved one. She is a protector of the sacred moments BETWEEN you and your loved one as you labor and bring your precious baby into the world.

I would be honored to be the protector of your sacred.

I am a graduate of Hope College in History and bring with me a knowledge of what birth used to be, what it can be, and how we can make it better. I am also a DONA trained Doula and a CPM Midwifery Student. I come from a faith background that leads me towards the belief that you were MADE to do this. While I hold this belief in one hand, I hold in the other the belief that we are blessed to live in a time where you have options, both natural and medical, to assist you in safely giving birth, should you need them.

If you are just starting your pregnancy journey, congratulations! Lets celebrate this sacred and exciting time. If this is your first pregnancy, take it all in. If its your 5th, do the same. Every baby is different, and you might feel different. While you spend the next several months absorbing information and wondering who this baby will be, remember to cherish this most intimate time with baby, and with your partner.

The end of a pregnancy can bring so many emotions. Relief, excitement, joy, sadness, fear, anxiety, and everything in between. All of these feelings are normal and healthy. Its normal to feel sad that this period is ending while also being excited that you are about to meet baby! Maybe you are feeling joyful about this journey into motherhood but don't know what to expect from you birth. That is normal too!

Remember, you have prepared for this moment. The end of something means the beginning of something else. You are strong and your body can be trusted. Rely on your partner, use the strength that they are willing to give you. Call out to God in thanksgiving and in anguish, because He hears is all and He can take it all.

Embrace this moment and never apologize for how you feel.

Proper nutrition is SO important. But it can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’ve decided that the easiest and best thing you can do is take your prenatal vitamins and call it a day. And that is a great way to start, and I’m certainly not saying don’t take it. But we can do better!

We can find health in our environment when we know where to look. Why spend $30 on vitamin D supplements when 15 minutes in the sun is BETTER?! (And free 😏) You are going to be eating food (I would hope) so let’s make it the right stuff.

Being reminded to move while you are experiencing all of the symptoms of pregnancy might make you groan. And that’s ok! Movement during this time should be within your capacity. I know that getting up and going for a 3 miles hike might not be your idea of an ideal afternoon right now. So don’t! Maybe movement for you looks like:
- sitting on a yoga ball and doing some stretching (I have some great options for this!)
- going for a walk to a coffee shop with a friend
- dancing with your toddler in the living room
- or anything else that makes you feel good!

“My body knows what to do, I don’t need to practice before I go into labor”

You’re body DOES know what to do. Your instincts are strong. But your fear of the unknown and of the pain that is unfamiliar to you, is also strong and it is also natural. The thinking part of your brain can get in the way of your instincts when you don’t know what’s happening. So let’s make sure that you do.

Take a birth class, get a doula, make a birth plan, and ACTUALLY practice those breathing techniques. And make sure your partner is along for the ride.

An educated birth is a happy birth. Take luck out of the equation and prepare for birth.
