It was hard to leave
my child
at school today
with the blood of
other parents’ children
so freshly spilled
the gun barely cooled
from its rage
the hands holding it now
cold and on their way to
burial
death without trial
world without justice

It was hard to watch her
walk away
heavy backpack
slung over her
shoulders
braid swinging
hope in her step
when nineteen
other children
will never
walk or
laugh or
dream again
when a life meant
nothing
to the teenager behind
the trigger

It was hard to breathe this morning
when my mind
raced through
worst-case scenarios
when the principal
emailed
to reassure the
fearful the
grieving the
broken-hearted
they know what to do
if it happens
here
in our
home instead of
someone else’s

It is hard to live in this
country
that values
guns more than
life
that insists there’s no
problem other than
a monster’s
mental health
that insists on
more control of a
uterus
than a
weapon of war
maybe these men
who can’t give
life feel their only
power is in the
possibility of
taking it away

It is hard to be
human today
but the
hummingbird hovers
above my head and
the larkspur
beckons with
brilliant purple and
the ocean
keeps time the
way it has since
the world began
and
hope claws its way
to the surface
holding grief’s hand

It was hard to leave my child
at school today
as it is every day
in this country that
that sees
children as
pawns in a
political game
lining pockets
with blood while
wiping possibility
from a parent’s
heart
and yet
there is hope
that we can make
a difference
if enough of us
care
if enough of us
act
if enough of us
die
