CAUTION ⚠️ GRAPHIC ⚠️ ACHTUNG This young teen was struck with a chainsaw resulting in an extensor carpi ulnaris tendon injury in his wrist with a significant gap in the tendon, appreciable on MRI. I recommended exploration of his wrist and tendon reconstruction with a palmaris longus tendon graft (the palmaris longus is an accessory flexor of the wrist). The precise amount of graft necessary to bridge the gap was harvested in a minimally invasive way from his volar wrist and transplanted. This very brave and resilient young patient has done exceedingly well. He has full range of motion and strength and is back to all of his regular activities, including youth sports. I’m grateful for he and his family’s confidence in me and for his outstanding result. 🙏🏻

This awesome patient is the third member of a wonderful family of patients that I have operated on. She wanted to improve her nasal curvature and reduce her dorsal hump with a cosmetic rhinoplasty while treating her deviated septum. We were able to accomplish both of her aesthetic goals using a closed technique. I’m grateful to her and her family for their confidence in me 🙏🏻👃🏻👍🏻

With the holiday weekend approaching, today was our medical student, Dr. Emma Chant’s last day on rotation with us. Emma graduated college from MIT and has a PhD in chemistry from Stanford University. She decided to switch gears with her career and enrolled in the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine to become a doctor of medicine. She is currently in her fourth year. I am honored that she chose to enroll in our elective in plastic surgery as she considers a career in OB/GYN surgery. It was a very busy month and she did an outstanding job while on rotation with us. She is one of the best students I’ve worked with since I started the elective four years ago. Today she gave an excellent final presentation on congenital hand anomalies. I am grateful for her time with us and I’m confident she will accomplish great things in her future. 👨🏻‍⚕️

I remember interviewing her and telling her we had been through a number of receptionists and were looking for someone to stabilize the position. More than a decade later I got to hug her at her retirement lunch. Thanks Patty for all you did for us. You understood the assignment and we are grateful for your work. My best wishes to you on your next phase. 🙏🏻🥹

CAUTION ⚠️ GRAPHIC ⚠️ ACHTUNG Weight loss is happening more than ever these days, and while the weight goes away, the loose skin doesn’t. This morning Said Abou Samra and I helped this massive weight loss patient turn bat wings 🦇 into Michelle Obama arms 🥰

CAUTION ⚠️ GRAPHIC ⚠️ ACHTUNG This lovely lady happens to be one of my favorite patients. She presented to me over a year ago in consultation for breast reconstruction after recently being diagnosed with breast cancer. When we met she told me her focus was entirely on clearing the cancer and was not concerned about having her breasts rebuilt. She was happy to have her breast wounds simply closed flatly. I told her that she had options for breast reconstruction and to her credit she took the time to hear me out. She decided to take my advice and attempt to restore her breasts. It’s been a long process, and it wasn’t easy, but I am grateful that she never wavered in her confidence in me. I saw her this week at the completion of this reconstructive journey. She underwent a bilateral DIEP flap breast reconstruction in February and has done beautifully since the surgery. Her large, voluptuous breasts have been restored with her own abdominal tissue. Her abdomen is flatter, and her breasts are lifted and more perky. They look and feel natural. She is cancer-free. Wednesday I mentioned how fortunate I am to get to work with my father. I am also tremendously grateful for the opportunity to work with my brothers regularly, who helped with her complex case. I tell patients that we are a family business, and our business is plastic surgery. 🔬 🔥👙🙏🏻

Another smiling medical student at the end of her rotation! 🥰 Jenny did an outstanding job over the last 4 weeks and I very much enjoyed having her with us. She took call with me last week and we were up all night together (with ) in the hospital operating on hand emergencies. I told her she could have the next day off, but she instead joined me for regular office hours the following morning. Not only is she a hard worker and very diligent, but she gave an excellent final presentation today (over Jaan’s pizza 🍕 ) on extensor tendon injuries inspired by her night of call with me. She wants to be a plastic surgeon and I am confident she has what it takes to get there. Today she has officially completed her third year of medical school and I wish her luck on her plastic surgery research fellowship in Buffalo next year. I am hopeful her experience with us is a step forward toward a bright career in plastic and hand surgery. 👨🏻‍⚕️
