DONALD. E. MORFORD

Donald E. Morford, 85, of Holton, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. He was born on January 17, 1941, in Holton, Kansas, to Ralph and Anna (DeVader) Morford. He graduated from Emmett High School in 1959 and then attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, where he played football. He was later called to serve the country he loved so much, and proudly served active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas, with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Education in 1969, and a Master’s Degree in Education in 1970.

On January 23, 1965, he married Mary Christine Glick at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys, Kansas. Together, they celebrated over 61 years of marriage. They had two children, Margaret Ann and Kristina Dawn.

Don taught school for five years at Partridge/Pretty Prairie High School, one year at Clearwater High School, and 26 years at Holton Middle School. During his years of teaching, he received several recognitions, including Holton Optimist Teacher of the Year, and was recognized by the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation Awards Program as a teacher and school shop instructor during the 1971–1972 school year.

Don was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, and a Life Member and Past Grand Knight of Holton Knights of Columbus Council No. 4219.

Don loved spending time with family and especially enjoyed his four grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and sportsman. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time at his farm, which he called The Lonesome Pine, where he hunted, fished and cared for his horses.

Don had exceptional woodworking skills and, with the help of friends, built the family home during the summer of 1977, where he and Mary lived ever since.

He enjoyed attending auctions and farm sales and was an avid collector. Don loved traveling, and he and Mary spent their early retirement years visiting Europe and 48 states.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Margaret (Paul) Root of Lenexa; grandchildren Jack and John Paul Root of Lenexa, Dalton Frantz of Lenexa, and Sydney (Tristan) Weinbrenner of Topeka; son-in-law Jarrod Frantz of Raymore; sisters Joanne Ward of Tahlequah and Jeannie Moylan of St. Marys; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Anna Morford, and daughter Kristina Dawn Frantz in 2014.

Don loved God, his family, his friends, his students, and his country, and he made a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 3rd at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Inurnment with military honors will follow. A Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, followed by visitation until 7:00. On-line condolences may be made at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com

JULIA ANN CONAWAY

Julia Ann Conaway, 85 of Topeka, Kansas, passed peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026.

She was born in Blaine, Kansas, the daughter of Urban and Cecelia (Roggenkamp) O’Keeffe. She attended school in Wheaton, Kansas.

Julia married the love of her life, Roy Conaway, on December 10, 1957. Roy preceded her in death in 2022 after celebrating 64 years of wedded bliss. Together they raised their six children: Mark Conaway (Carolyn), Marlene Conaway (Mark Stevens), Linda McCracken (John), Michael Conaway (Lisa), Larry Conaway (Kim), Nancy Lohse (Tim) and their granddaughter, Ann (Conaway) Crowley.

Grandchildren include: Bryson Conaway (Haley), Caitrin Temmen (Cole), Brandon McCracken (Rosa), Amanda Simmons (Chris), Emily McCracken, Amy McCracken, Mason Conaway (Stephanie), Monica Conaway (Nikolas), Michael Conaway (Amy), Halie Lohse, Corey Lohse (Krista), and Erika Lohse (Trevor); and great grandchildren Michael, Corson and Xander Crowley; Benson, Chasey and Bowen Conaway; Calai, Celise and Cruz Temmen; Kyrin Lohse; Emmie and Violet Meyer; Anthony (Candice) and Josh Morgan; Maddison Conaway; Lukas Cruz; and Sophia Conaway; and great-great grandchild Kinslee Morgan.

Other survivors include her siblings Marsha Bergman, Steve O’Keeffe (Linda), and Pam Kufahl (Mark).

Julia was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings John (Jack) O’Keefe, Galen (Bud) O’Keefe, and Verlene McNally.

She was deeply grateful for the kindness and loving care she received in her final years from Ann, Corson and Xander Crowley and Halie Lohse.

Memorial Services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 26th at the Topeka Baptist Church. Inurnment will follow in Prairie Home Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Pat Hainline, 77, of Hoyt, passed away Friday, May 15, 2026 at the Rossville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born November 2, 1948 in Topeka, the daughter of Robert and Geneva Strickland Thompson. She graduated from Topeka West High School.

Pat worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Merry Manor Nursing Home and later at the Jackson County Nursing Home. She was a member of the former Christ’s Church in Holton.

Pat ran Christ’s Closet out of her home for ten years. She loved to cook, bake, host barbeques and to help people in any way that she could. She also gardened and played the piano and organ.

She married Larry Hainline on May 17, 1987 at the Mayetta Christian Church. He preceded her in death on March 11, 2012.

Survivors include a son, Jeremy Hainline, Hoyt, three daughters, Trish Sutton (Neale), Hoyt, Sarah Moreau, Topeka and Michelle Strickland, Clayton, NC, one sister, Janet DeWeese and seven grandchildren, Hannah, Amanda, Glenn, Stephen, Annika, Rachel and Will.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 20th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt. Burial will follow in the Hoyt Cemetery. ORVILLE JOSEPH HUTFLES

Orville Joseph Hutfles, 88, of Holton, passed away Monday, May 11, 2026 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 29, 1937 at Kelly, the son of Harry and Agnes Huerter Hutfles. He graduated from Kelly High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.

Orville was a believer and follower of Christ. He loved music and listening to his family play, especially on their trips to Arkansas. He was an avid baseball fan, having played many years when he was younger. He designed and built many things over the years and would build anything for anybody. He had earned his pilot’s license, and was a member of Wetmore American Legion Post 282 and Wetmore Knights of Columbus Council 10301.

Orville was a farmer and a stockman. He also worked for the Jackson County Road and Bridge Department, and later for the City of Holton, first in the power and light department, and then in the street department. He retired from the city after seventeen years. He also did dozing, welding, and mechanic work, and was an auctioneer.

He married Shirley Lierz on February 3, 1968 at Wetmore. She survives, of the home.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vern Hutfles.

Other survivors include a daughter, Ellie Haverkamp (Kevin), Wetmore, two sons, Jesse Hutfles (Connie), Wichita and Charlie Hutfles (Jennifer), Horton, one brother, Jerry Hutfles (Lynda), Topeka, two sisters, Carolyn Haverkamp, Seneca and Betty Grollmes (Jim), Perry, fifteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Memorial services with military honors will be Tuesday, May 19th , 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Wetmore Cemetery. LYNN “COOTER” KROHN

Lynn “Cooter” Krohn, 65, of Onaga, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

He was born December 25, 1960 in Onaga, the son of Myron and Orlene Kufahl Krohn. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1979.

Cooter was a volunteer firefighter with the Wheaton and Onaga Fire Departments.

After high school, he worked at Kufahl Hardware in Wheaton. He later worked for the Matzke Hog Market and later for Bob’s Service. For over thirty years Cooter worked for the City of Onaga, attaining the position of Public Works Supervisor.

He married Daun Renfro on November 18, 1989 in Onaga. She survives, of the home.

Cooter loved the outdoors and the life he built around family, hard work, and simple pleasures. Whether he was giving his grandkids and dogs rides on the golf cart, keeping his yard and others perfectly mowed, or caring for his tomato plants, he found happiness in everyday moments. He enjoyed cheering on all the ball teams, watching NASCAR, playing co****le, and reminiscing about his days playing slow-pitch softball. More than anything, though, he treasured his role as Papa. His grandchildren were the center of his world, and the love, laughter, and memories they shared together will live on forever.

Cooter was preceded in death by his father and a cousin, Kevin Haefner.

Other survivors include two daughters, Miranda Clowe (Neil), Wetmore and Kendal DeWalt (Keaton), Wamego, a son, Daniel Krohn (Jayme), Wamego, two brothers, Duane Krohn, Westmoreland and Mark Krohn (Suzanne), Onaga, two sisters, Delores “Dee” Ubel (Larry), Wheaton and Brenda Schlegel (Jay), Westmoreland, three grandchildren, Cal Krohn, Walker DeWalt and Miles Krohn, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 15th at the First Congregational Church in Onaga. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery. Cooter will lie in state at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thursday. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. We have a cabinet and a chair that we are giving away. They are in one of our apartments in Onaga.

The cabinet has ball bearing drawer slides and door rollers. We do not have a key for the locks on the drawers.

The chair is a small Queen Ann rocker.

HAROLD E. WALKER

Harold Edward Walker was born October 4, 1941 at Holton, Kansas to Christopher J. and Mildred (Walsh) Walker. He passed from this life March 23, 2026, in Panama City, Florida.

Harold graduated from Mayetta High School in 1959 and attended St. Benedict’s College, Atchison. He served 6 years in the United States Army in the States, Germany, and Vietnam.

Harold worked as an ASE Certified Master Auto Technician and later farmed near Mayetta. He enjoyed music and bowling. He served the NFO as grain chairman and belonged to the American Legion Post 423 at Mayetta.

Harold married Beverly Jeffrey, June 13, 1971. They had 3 children; Harold Edward Walker, Jr. (Charlie), Christopher Walker (Melissa), and Sherry Lowrey (Chico), all of Panama City. They later divorced.

He married Dianne Boeselager on October 4, 1997. She survives along with her sons, Mark (Elaine) Boeselager, Matthew (Jessica) Boeselager of Topeka, and Jason (Anne) Boeselager of Chicago, Illinois.

Harold is survived by four sisters, Helen (Richard) Bausch and Joann Walker (Max Martin) of Mayetta, Rosemary Bergeron, Olathe, and Patricia (Alan) Erickson, Colby; two brothers-in-law Melroy Kopsa, Cuba, and Arnold Schumacher, Holton, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta on Saturday, May 9th at 10:00 a.m. A Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. Inurnment with military honors will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, west of Holton.

MARION BROXTERMAN

Marion Broxterman, 81, of Mayetta, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born June 8, 1944, at Baileyville, the son of A.J. and Helen Nolte Broxterman. He was the tenth of fourteen children. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1963 and served in the U.S. Navy in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Long Beach, California.

Marion managed the Sutton Grocery Store in Topeka before moving to Florida, where he was in grocery store management as well.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Spain Carver; this November would have marked 61 years of their marriage. Other survivors include two daughters, Dawn Broxterman, Kannapolis, NC, and Tammy Sharp, Delia, KS; a son, Brian Broxterman (Silke), Obertshausen, Germany; six grandchildren, Kevin, Ryan, Jeremy (Nellja), Rachel (Glenn), Cheyenne, and Joshua; and four great-grandchildren, Hailey, Alicia, Henry, and Daphne.

Marion is most remembered for his love of jokes and pranks, always wanting to put a smile on everyone's face, especially his wife's.

Vickie L. Barr, 82, formerly of Hoyt, passed away on April 16, 2026, at the Lexington Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in Topeka.

She was born August 1, 1943 at Hays, the daughter of Warren and Marge Walters Moore. She graduated from Bethel College with a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, and received her Master’s Degree in social work from the University of Kansas.

Vickie worked at various jobs, including Mammels Store and Dillons Grocery. Her career was as a clinical social worker, working with hospices and geriatric psychiatric units.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta, and the Altar Society at the church. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary at Hays, the National Association of Social Workers and the Kansas Association of Medical Social Workers, where she served as Treasurer. She was a Girl Scout and a Girl Scout Leader for 4 Winds Girl Scout Council.

She married Larry Barr on July 24, 1961 at LaCrosse. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1984.
Vickie was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Beth Higgins.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Barr, Atlanta, GA, Bev Johnson (Daniel), Topeka and Stacie Garcia (Daniel), Newton, one brother, Dick Moore, Great Bend, two sisters, Terri Gray, Colorado Springs, CO and Shari Johnson, Topeka, six grandchildren, Chris Garcia (Allie), Erica Garcia, Luke Johnson (Chantal), Eli Johnson, Hannah Ayala (Bryan) and Lydia Lange (Rory), and three great grandchildren, Devin Burke, David Ayala and Rita Lange.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 22nd at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta. Inurnment and committal service will be 3:30 p.m. that day at St. Michael Cemetery in LaCrosse, KS. Karen Elizabeth Kopitzke, 77, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center in Onaga, KS.

She was born April 2, 1949, in Orange, California, the daughter of Clifford and Bernice Shedd Kopitzke. She graduated from Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA in 1967 and attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.

Karen met the challenges she faced in life with a resilient spirit. Along the way, she lived in California, Michigan, Washington state, and Kansas. She enjoyed living in Manhattan, KS, for many years but aways remained a Californian at heart.

She was a voracious reader and loved to travel far and wide through the books she read. Her reading and attention to current events resulted in a large vocabulary she didn’t hesitate to use.

Karen enjoyed singing and reading aloud, loved the ocean, and relished a hot cup of tea and a good piece of cheese. She was an ace at nurturing finicky house plants and was partial to cats, including the K-State Wildcat athletic teams.

Survivors include a son, Richard Payne, in Kansas; a daughter, Caryn Husk, in California; a sister, Christine Kopitzke, in California; and a granddaughter, Linnaea.

No public services are planned. Karen’s ashes are to be scattered in the Pacific Ocean. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga, KS, is assisting the family. Online condolences may be shared at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com.
