GEM Award Winner: Annie Nissen

Please join us in congratulating Annie Nissen, our latest GOing the Extra Mile (GEM) Award recipient!

When a patient living at a local nursing home contacted HCH about a worsening wound, the provider prescribed antibiotics and requested an updated wound culture to help guide the patient’s care.

Annie contacted the nursing home to coordinate collection of the culture that same day, but learned the facility did not have the necessary supplies. Rather than allowing that to delay the patient’s care, Annie found a solution.

She used her **own lunch break to personally deliver the needed culture supplies to the nursing home** and then transported the completed specimen back to the HCH Laboratory for testing.

💙 Annie’s actions are a wonderful example of our **H.E.A.R.T. Service Standards:**

**Teamwork** – She coordinated with the provider, nursing home staff, and Laboratory to keep the patient’s care moving forward.

**Respectfulness** – She recognized the facility’s limitations and worked collaboratively to find a solution rather than allowing them to become a barrier to care.

**Empathy** – She understood the importance of timely follow-up and willingly gave up her own time to help ensure the patient received the care they needed.

Sometimes going the extra mile means recognizing a barrier and simply deciding, **“I can help fix that.”**

Thank you, Annie, for your initiative, compassion, and commitment to our patients. Your actions are a wonderful example of **Personalized Care, Hometown Heart.** 💙
