When someone reaches out for help, the window to act is small.

Gerald Duggan, Linda Ventura, and Mary unpack the real barriers that stand between a person and recovery, from the walls that go up after 28 days to the $20 that can derail everything. Being present in that first moment matters more than most people realize.

Substance use disorder affects the entire family ecosystem, and so often, loved ones carry heavy questions like, "What didn't I do for them?"

In this candid discussion, Linda Ventura, Mary, and Gerald Duggan emphasize why support must be consistent and compassionate. People struggling do not need more lectures, they need dedicated allies who show up, listen, and walk alongside them with real resources.

People often focus heavily on the specific drug, but as Linda and Gerald share, the substance itself is almost secondary. When your nervous system is trapped in survival mode, flight or freeze, your body is simply seeking a way to feel safe and calm. It does not judge whether something is good or bad, it just reaches for relief.

Gerald’s comparison says it all: just as a child with a severe allergy cannot eat cheese, someone with the disease of addiction cannot simply handle a drink or a substance like everyone else. Replacing one substance with another does not heal the disease, because the real issue is not the drink or the drug. The real issue is the underlying psychic wound.

Every person suffering from addiction has experienced trauma. As Gerald notes, learning abstinence without addressing that underlying trauma leaves the job half done. When brain chemistry ignites the disease of addiction, it cannot simply be switched off. We have to understand the why to build lasting recovery.

When people say, "I could feel it in my gut," that is a real, physical sensation. As Gerald and Linda discuss, somatic practices like yoga, breathwork, sound healing, and EMDR help release deep trauma stored within the body without always having to speak about it.

Trauma is far more than just a word or an idea. As Gerald and Linda share, trauma is a physical response where your nervous system is triggered because you do not feel safe. You cannot simply think your way out of it, because it requires a physical process of healing. Understanding this is key to addressing the root causes of recurrence and addiction.
