For more than 60 years, the South Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary has played an important role in supporting care at South Peninsula Hospital. In the early days, Auxiliary members raised funds and donated countless volunteer hours. They sewed pajamas and curtains, helped furnish patient rooms, and even purchased equipment like a film projector for staff trainings.

Today, the Auxiliary continues that tradition of service by operating the hospital gift shop, with all proceeds benefiting patients and residents. We’re grateful for the dedication, generosity, and community spirit this group has brought to the hospital for more than six decades.

Congratulations to Holley Hightower for 20 years of service with South Peninsula Hospital. Holley began her career at South Peninsula Hospital’s laboratory as a night shift Clinical Laboratory Scientist, taking calls and quickly proving her dedication. From the very beginning, she has been an asset, not only to her peers in the lab, but to staff across departments. Though she left SPH for a short while, her recent return and new leadership role as Laboratory Director allows her contributions to continue to grow. She is an invaluable asset to the entire hospital, and we thank her for her continued service and commitment!

TBT! The contributions made by Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Bartlett to the Kenai Peninsula Public Utility District No. 1 for the benefit of the Homer Hospital-Health Center, during the period of 1955-1959, were significant factors in the success of the project. Their initial donation of $15,000 for hospital equipment and supplies set the course for a "hospital" rather than a "first-aid station," which many felt was the only goal a community with a population of 1,000 would be capable of attaining.

The Homer Hospital opened on July 1, 1956, and six months later, it became evident that they needed more space to support the number of patients. When the cost estimate of a proposed addition was estimated to be $32,000, Helen and Ed Bartlett generously donated another $16,000 to be used as matching funds toward the construction. The addition, the Helen Turner Bartlett Wing, became a reality in 1960. The Bartlett's total contribution of $31,000 (equivalent to over $300,000 today) represented a great act of philanthropy in the history of Homer. For this the community will always be grateful.

South Peninsula Hospital is expanding access to care with the opening of our new Urgent Care in Homer this June. This addition is a direct response to what we’ve heard from our community: greater access to timely, convenient care when you need it most. Designed to complement primary care, Urgent Care is the right choice for non-life-threatening concerns like minor injuries, illnesses, and conditions that can’t wait for a scheduled appointment but don’t require emergency services.

The Urgent Care Clinic is located at 4201 Bartlett Street, in a shared building with the Family Care Clinic. The Clinic will be open starting June 1st Monday to Saturday, 7am – 7pm. Walk-ins and all ages welcome.
